What To Do When The Vets Are Healthy?

Post by Dan_Stonerook »

Ben Gamel, Yoshi Tsutsugo, Josh VanMeter, and Kevin Newman are all getting ready to start or have started rehab assignments.

What do you do with them?

Gamel and Newman I would keep. Send down Mitchell and Castillo.

VanMeter and Tsutsugo I would cut.

I would keep Gamel. Newman must have some trade value, so I'd look to move him.

My thought is if Gamel, Vogelbach, Yu Chang, Van Meter, Newman or Tsutsugo will have any part of the Pirate future, it will be as a back-up.
For any of those guys to have trade value, they need to catch fire the next few weeks in the majors. I would say after a few weeks, we should keep at most 2 of those 6 guys. There are also intangibles we don't see from players as well because stats don't measure them. Which of these guys help build the team atmosphere?

Keep Gamel, Vogelbach and Newman. Chang, Tsutsugo and Van Meter can go.

Gamel and Newman would make great backups.

I'm not looking to dump anybody right now. Except Eikhoff. They need the depth.

Yoshi, Newman, and VanMeter are rehabbing now. When they come back, I would send Mitchell, Castillo, and Park down.

Gamel is not rehabbing yet so that's a decision that can come a little later.

They'll be trading what they can of these guys, and can re-adjust after the deadline.

They just showed Vogelbach having a conversation with Cruz (probably about his at bat). Cruz looked engaged which is nice to see a conversation like that.

The 13 position players should be IMHO:

Perez
Heineman
Madris
Vogelbach
Marcano
Chavis
Newman
Cruz
Hayes
Suwinski
Reynolds
Gamel
Van Meter

Pitching
Thompson SP
Quintana SP
Keller SP
Brubaker SP
Contreras SP
Mears RP
Peters RP
Crowe RP
Stratton RP
Bednar RP
Banda RP
De Jong RP
Vieaux RP

Castillo, Mitchell, Park should be getting as many AB’s as possible in the minors. I don’t like keeping them as bench players on the MLB roster.

Chang, Tsutsugo, and Marisnek have little to no value other than depth.

Chavis, Newman, Vogelbach, and Quintana are the only trade pieces that might return a mid level or two type prospect.

Should be some interesting moves being made in the next 5 weeks.
