Div II Playoff Picks (Round One) Game times listed as EST

Super Region I Picks by Husky

Ashland won the first encounter early in the season. Playing at home, I look for the Eagles to win again. 1 PM

Shepherd at home will defeat New Haven. Rams QB Bagent will have another 300 plus yards passing, but without all the miscues that the Rams committed against IUP in the PSAC title game. 1 PM

Assumption playing their usual tough defense wins over a Slippery Rock team with a lot of injuries on the offensive side of the ball--including standout QB Grover, who did not play in the Kutztown game, which the Rock lost 23--21. Grover supposedly will be ready to go against Assumption, but will he be up to snuff. Incidentally, Assumption shut out Kutztown in Week One by a score of 7--0. 1 PM

Super Region II Picks

Virginia Union of the CIAA at home wins over Wingate of the SAC. 1 PM

Delta State of the GSC gets the win over Fayetteville of the CIAA. 2 PM

West Florida makes it three for three for the GSC with their win over Limestone of the SAC. 1 PM

Super Region III Picks

Ouachita Baptist is home playing playoff perennial Northwest Missouri State. This is a tough game to pick, but I don't think the Tigers are up to beating the highly playoff experienced Bearcats, who will be able to keep the Tigers' running game in check to the extent that the Bearcats win this first round game. 2 PM

Ferris State handled Davenport fairly easily in the regular season. there is no reason to think this game will turn out differently. Ferris State Bulldogs win the game! 1 PM

Pittsburg State won the MIAA championship, and the Gorillas will also win this first round game in the post season. 2 PM

Super Region !V Picks

Winona State of the NSIC wins over Bemidji State--also of the NSIC. 2 PM

Colorado Mines defeats Colorado Pueblo. Both teams from the RMAC. 3 PM

Minnesota State continues its late season excellent play and beats Wayne State of Nebraska Both teams from the NSIC. 2 PM

Final Commentary on the 2022 PSAC Football Season.

In the PSAC East, it was a bit surprising to see West Chester have as much difficulty with winning as they did, but the team is relatively young and should be much improved next year. Millersville was a team that was enjoyable to watch and showed marked improvement. They notably played Shepherd really tough for a half and were in the game into the second half. Kutztown, with a murderous schedule-including California, Shepherd, Slippery Rock and Assumption acquitted themselves well except for stubbing their toes against West Chester. Take notice that three teams on the Golden Bears' schedule made the Super Region I playoffs--including the #2 and #3 seeds--Shepherd and Assumption. Shippensburg was hard to figure out. Some games they looked great, and other times not so great. Their late season upset win over Gannon was a prime example. East Stroudsburg also was a bit hard to figure out. They began the season losing to Pace--hardly a power in the Northeast 10. Then they played IUP to a final score loss of 38--35. Later, they almost gave away a game to an, ill fated Bloomsburg team but managed to hold on for a win thanks to an unbelievable goal line stand. It is no surprise the inconsistent Warriors ended up 4--7. Bloomsburg was a team this year that could have won a lot more games than they did. If ones looks at the results, the Huskies could have been 7--4 or even 8--3 instead of 4--7. They lost two games in OT. They only lost decisively to Shippensburg, Kutztown, and Shepherd. Husky accused them several times during the season of being in disarray, and they were--especially when it came to making a play when most needed. or coming up with an imaginative play call from the bench. The Huskies have fallen greatly from the days of Danny Hale's powerhouse teams. Lastly, there is Lock Haven, who by my way of thinking simply has no way of attracting and recruiting the needed talent to compete in the PSAC. Other athletic teams at LHU are not so saddled and hampered by such an egregious handicap.

Out in the West, it appeared that Clarion had made some steps in the right direction, but as the season progressed it showed that things had not changed that much. Seton Hill is hard to figure out with only two wins. Somewhat similar to LHU in the East. Edinboro is another one of those mystery teams. They ended up 5--6, and sprung the surprise of the year in the conference by upsetting IUP. They beat some lesser teams, but faded against the stronger ones--except for the IUP game. Gotta wonder. Gannon was the surprise of the year and finished in a tie for the regular season West title, and handed IUP its only regular season loss. The heartbreaking loss to enigmatic Shippensburg in the last game off the season, however, excluded the Golden Knights from the Super Region I playoff picture. Mercyhurst simply had a dreadful season, and not much more can be said. California had a very difficult schedule and suffered some really tough losses. They lost to Shepherd in OT, they lost to IUP on a late freaky penalty--but who knows if the penalty had not occurred would the Vulcans have scored? Cal also lost a close one to Kutztown on the road. They also fell victim to surprising Gannon--as did some others. The Vulcans truly deserved a better fate. The loss to IUP was the crusher! SRU looked like the team to beat in the West until their homecoming game, when IUP came to town and almost ran them off the field. In fairness, however, SRU's offense did suffer from quite a few injuries late in the season. With the two losses--one to Kutztown the last game of the season, they are fortunate to be included in the post-season., but then again strength is important. Lastly, IUP ended up King of the Hill. The big win over The Rock was the key along with the late-in-the-game stroke of luck at California. The loss to Gannon was certainly a surprise, but the Hawks were able to regroup and move on. They were able to do what most teams have not been able to do against Shepherd and that was "bend but don't break". All in all, the season ended up as many anticipated with a showdown between the Rams and the Crimson Hawks with IUP winning it all. Thanks to all you PSAC followers and for all your views. See you Saturday for Round One of the post-season. Watch out for the snow and travel safely.

Div II Playoff Scores--First Round

SR I

Ashland 20 Notre Dame 13

Shepherd 16 New Haven 13

Slippery Rock 17 Assumption 14

SR II

Wingate 32 Virginia Union 7

Delta State 57 Fayetteville State )

West Florida 45 Limestone 19

SR III

Northwest Missouri State 47 Ouachita Baptist 17

Ferris State 41 Davenport 7

Pittsburg State 35 Indianapolis 0

SR IV

Bemidji State 31 Winona state 7

Colorado Mines 45 CSU Pueblo 24

Minnesota State 26 Wayne State (Nebr) 9

Husky picked 9 of the 12 games correctly. He missed on three games by picking Assumption, Virginia Union, and Winona State. So it went in the first round. Next weekend's round of 16 will be much more competitive, and I would say with respect to the PSAC that both Shepherd and Slippery Rock will have to pick it up offensively if either hopes to get to the Super Regional final, but more on that later.

Shepherd Edges New Haven

https://shepherdrams.com/news/2022/11/1 ... ecord.aspx

Not the most impressive performance by Shepherd. The Rams allowed New Haven to hang around the entire game, and it almost cost them. The Rams will have to ramp it up next week against Slippery Rock, who has a pretty darn good QB of their own in Grover.

Slippery Rock Wins by a Field Goal Over Defense Minded Assumption

https://rockathletics.com/news/2022/11/ ... ption.aspx

After the first half, this game was a battle of the defenses. It is now easy to understand how Assumption was able to shut out Kutztown 7--0 in the first game of the season way back when. So now SRU goes to Shepherd next week for a game that will feature perhaps the best two QBs in the PSAC--Bagent of Shepherd and Grover of SRU. Should be fun. I suspect both teams will be more effective offensively than they were against New Haven and Assumption respectively.
