Comments on Super Region Three

Grand Valley State after beating Lindenwood of the GLVC will find much tougher sledding as the Lakers must go on the road to play #1 in the nation Ferris State in a rematch of epic proportions in the GLIAC. Ferris State won the first encounter 35--28 at Allendale on the road, and I am hesitant to say they will also win the second meeting at home. These two teams are very evenly matched. It could be a case of whoever scores last will win the game. There is very little or any lopsidedness when it comes to comparing stats. Husky is going with Ferris state, but only because they are playing at home. A Lakers victory would not be a great surprise. Another interesting match-up sees Northwest Missouri State visiting the #2 seed Harding. The Bearcats ran up a lot of points this past weekend against Central Washington in somewhat of a mismatch, but such will probably not be the case in this SR semifinal. If Harding can successfully run the ball as they are usually able to do--sometimes for over 400 YARDS in a game, they have a great chance of winning this game. if the Bearcats can snuff their running game, then it will be a different story. Incidentally, the Bearcats only allowed their opponents a bit under 40 yards per game rushing as an average. Pretty impressive!! Husky thinks NWMSU will be able to limit the damage done by Harding's rushing game and in Husky's estimate will come away with a hard fought win. So much for SR3.

Commentary on Super Region Four

These teams baffle Husky to some degree, but he sees #1 seed Colorado Mines subduing dark horse Bemidji State, who seems to have come out of nowhere to make a splash and are playing in round two of the playoffs. Bemidji's offense is nothing to be sneezed at. These guys can score. The Beavers did, however, undergo a couple of one-sided defeats. Colorado Mines only suffered one loss to a very good Colorado Mesa team. Husky is inclined to go with the Miners who are the home team and are with good reason the #1 seed. The Miners will, however, have to play defense well enough to keep the Beavers' offense off the field as much as possible. The other match-up down in Texas between #2 seed Angelo State and Nebraska-Kearney bodes well for the Texans. It is difficult to go against a team that put a good old fashioned country whipping on Minnesota Duluth. It is true, NK had a number of high points in their season, but they also absorbed a couple of one-sided defeats. Husky has also read somewhere that the NSIC is overall not as good as it has been in past years. Then again, the Angelo State Rams also suffered two LSC conference defeats to Midwestern State and West Texas State, but they were competitive in both games in what was a topsy-turvy LSC race this year. Playing at home again, Husky sees the Texans winning again against the Lopers in this SR semifinal. That is it for Husky's predictions for the round of 16 or in other words the super regional semifinals.. It is now quality against quality! Thanks again for all the support as witnessed by over 15,000 views. I never dreamed that so many shared my intense interest in Division II Football.

Game of the Week??

No doubt in Husky's mind! The highly ranked Lakers of Grand Valley visiting the #1 team in the country, the Bulldogs of Ferris State. Go see a game if one is available in your area. Husky is not 100% up to snuff and will remain at home and has to be satisfied with checking in on all the games on the computer. The years are catching up to him at age 81, I guess. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. Husky will be back later this afternoon as soon as the final results start emerging.

Match-ups for the Super Regional Finals

#2 Shepherd meets #1 Kutztown at Kutztown.

#2 Bowie State visits #1 Valdosta State.

#3 Northwest Missouri State travels to #1 Ferris State.

#2 Angelo State takes on #1 Colorado School of Mines.

Notice there is only one team--NWMSU in SR3--who is not seeded either #1 or #2. The seeders have done a great job!!

Husky's picks to win these games will appear later in the week.

Husky went 6--2 in round two to up his totals to 13--7. He missed on the Notre Dame--Shepherd and Newberry--Bowie State games.

Game of the Week coming up?? Husky goes with Northwest Missouri State against Ferris State. i don't think Ferris State will be scoring so easily against the Bearcats as they did against Grand Valley State. Hopefully, there is not another snow storm on this coming Saturday.

Some commentary on Round 2 will be forthcoming later in a day or so.

Some Comments

Husky was not really too surprised by the paucity of scoring in the Kutztown--New Haven game, and he was also not surprised by Kutztown's defense and kicking game deciding the outcome. Think back a bit. New Haven beat Bentley twice--once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. Early in the year Bentley beat West Chester and so did Kutztown. We are now talking comparative scores, which is a dubious way to draw conclusions, but it did shape up that this game would be close with both teams playing good defense and jockeying for field position, and that is how it turned out. A muffed punt was the biggest play of the game giving Kutztown good field position and leading to their only touchdown. It is doubtful that the Golden Bears will hold down Shepherd with its great passing game to just seven points. Kutztown will have to score more than ten points to come away with a win to defeat the Rams. At the same time, Kutztown scoring quite a bit is a distinct possibility because Shepherd's pass defense is as leaky as a "busted' water main. Both Findlay and Notre Dame proved that to be true. Notre Dame had the Shepherd game all but wrapped up, but a short kick-off by Notre Dame with a nice runback leading to great field position led to Shepherd's QB Bagent engineering the comeback that pulled the game out of the fire for the Rams with but a couple of seconds remaining. Something can also be said for Notre Dame scoring their last TD too quickly and leaving too much time on the clock. Anybody who saw the game will know what Husky is getting at.

Down south, Valdosta scoring a ton of points was simply too much for West Georgia, who simply had no answer for the Blazers prolific offense. Husky was surprised that Bowie State was able to hold down Newberry's offense and come away with a win. Don't see how that can possibly happen this coming Saturday down at Valdosta State on the Blazers home field--or on any field for that matter. One might also say that Bowie State this year is one of the best CIAA entrants in the Division II tournament in years. So kudos to them for such a great season. In closing, Husky sees Kutztown's defense at home sufficiently limiting the Bagent led passing game of Shepherd, and the Golden Bears offense taking advantage of the Rams' porous past defense to get the win and move on to the national semifinals. Down in Georgia, Husky sees the Blazers of Valdosta winning over Bowie State by at least several--if not more-- touchdowns. More tomorrow or Thursday.

More Commentary

Even though Harding ran for over 200 yards, the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State defense was able to hold Harding to just 9 points and come away with the win to move on to a confrontation with Ferris State for the Super Regional 3 championship. We all saw how the Bulldogs destroyed Grand Valley in the snow this past weekend. The terrible weather did not seem to slow them down at all, although the Lakers did have 5 turnovers while Ferris State had none. On the other hand, considering the long established playoff prowess of NWMSU, it is hard to imagine that they will go down without putting up a valiant effort, but Husky sees homestanding Ferris State winning this game. Without getting into a lot of numbers and and stats--readily available for perusal in the game reports, this is how Husky sees things. The potent, versatile offense of Ferris State prevailing over the excellent defense of the Bearcats. In the other Super Regional tilt, it appears that Colorado School of Mines at home, based on their explosive offensive performance against Bemidji and others, should come away with the win against Angelo State and advance to the national semifinals. Results of games featuring common opponents--West Texas A & M and Chadron State--are all in favor of the Diggers over the Rams. Angelo State at home did have some difficulty putting down a feisty Neb-Kearney by a 20--7 score and is probably looking at the end of their season come Saturday. Husky hopes to add a few more words to this post either later today or tomorrow, which he has just done this early Saturday morning. From the initial 28 teams we are now down to 8, who are still in the running for the national title. As Husky said before, it is now quality teams mixing it up with quality teams. In summation, Husky foresees the following four in the national semis. Kutztown, Valdosta State, Ferris State, and Colorado school of Mines.
