Hedges is a funny guy to figure out his value. I would have to say maybe all 6 of our starting pitchers this year have done just as well or better than expected so far, and on fewer pitches. I get the thumbs down on Hedges with his usual hitless game, but I think he called a heck of a game that Ortiz probably couldn't have done without him. I think through 6 innings, Ortiz gave up only one run on less than 60 pitches.

If they ever go to the automated strike zone, does that take away the value of a catcher like Hedges. He’s already a tough guy to figure out his value. Stallings would be another catcher that probably has very little value with an automated strike zone system. His ability to frame pitches is his best attribute.

Hedges will learn his value once Rodgriguez and Davis arrive. When all else fails for hitless wonders, crow about things like "framing pitches" for catchers, "defense, or "great clubhouse guy" for anyone else.
