And looking at San Diego's spending, they are a prime example of money can't fix everything.

I'm not sure that there's any one right way or wrong way to field a team.

Whatever works.

Whatever doesn't, just spin it to the masses. Somebody will buy it.

Let's separate 1) How to spend on your budget with 2) How to build a team.

My point with #1 is that a $15 million error on a $75m budget hurts a lot more than a $15m error on a $245m budget.
As far as building a team, the Padres traded away a ton of valued prospects to get some high priced players. You are correct that formula can't continue to work because of their depleted farm system.

The problem for the Padres is that the formula isn't winning right now. Or last season even...

The formula that teams like the Padres works well when they make sure that the players jell amongst each other. One valuable player proved to be far less valuable because of his digressions. I'm not clear as to how much that was foreseeable.

And, of course, every team faces the unknowns. Few get through a season without some guy being out for one reason or another. The key is how well they adjust.

As for whether a team should- or should not- trade assets to acquire the talent that they want, if that's the what they want to do, so be it. Some teams are willing to do that in hopes of fielding a more experienced team sooner. We have other teams- probably an equal number- who do nothing but sell some future that never arrives. They try to get fans to look at some farm system and totally ignore the MLB club that's right before their eyes.

The season's just past the quarter pole. The Pods are caught in bad times that we've been on for a few weeks. I don't know many teams that are immune to them. As with the Bucs, it's a matter of whether they're able to claw their way out of it.

Given their owner's recent aggressiveness, I wouldn't be surprised if he made personnel changes. He doesn't appear to be shy about going after guys he wants, or maybe his GM wants. It also wouldn't surprise me if he did a sort of about-face if he gets upset with results. It will be interesting to me to see what, if anything they do out there.
