This is one of those stats where the old-timers are at a small disadvantage. Seasons had fewer games.

It's a big difference when they talk about PS records. Before the late 1960's, the WS was the only round. Then again, they also had fewer teams/fewer players, too.

WS stats are apples-apples.

At any rate, when you have that many TB, you've done a lot right for a long time. Opposing pitchers want you to retire already. :)

TB is not one of the stats I follow too closely. I am glad Dan posted that McCutchen passed Arky on the all time Pirates TB list. I had to dive into the stat a little more than I normally would.

The all time leader in TB for their career is Hank Aaron with 6,856 TB, Pujols is a distant second with 8,211 TB. A difference of 645 TB between Hank and Pujols, that is an astonishing amount between the two. McCutchen who has had a very good career, is not even 1/2 way to Aaron. A statistic such as TB really makes you see what an incredible player Hank Aaron was. I am blow away.

Please check that first sentence. Something looks awry in the math.

I'll assume tgat TB would include any way a guy can reach base- hits, walks, errors, whatever.

I wonder if it includes thing like fielders choice and other ways that guys advance?

Agree. It's nice to know.....but, only so nice. I like Runs Scored a lot more.

If a guy scores, he's doing a few good things that help the team- getting on base, advancing, etc. It isn't the perfect stat, but it's good.

You would think total bases would include walks and errors, but it doesn't. It is a very generic stat that you may see used for Slugging percentage which equals total bases/at bats.

Total bases = singles times 1 + doubles times 2 + triples times 3 + home runs times 4.

Definition
Total bases refer to the number of bases gained by a batter through his hits. A batter records one total base for a single, two total bases for a double, three total bases for a triple and four total bases for a home run.

Total bases are used to determine a player's slugging percentage -- which is total bases divided by at-bats. A player can only add to his total-bases tally through a hit. Advancing on the basepaths -- even via a steal -- has no impact on a player's total bases.

When you reach the stage when folks mention you on All Time Lists....

Think of all the guys who've come and gone....including some good ones.
