Could it be the first crack in the ice?

Post by #9# »

Long maintained that regional sprorts networks lie at the heart of MLB's income equality . . . MLB controlling broadcast rights for all 30 teams opens the door to an arrangement that could more closely mirror the NFL approach.

Haven't read through the minutiae on this but, on first glance, I would not weep if MLB suddenly obtained control over broadcast rights for those teams who are part of Diamond Sports Network.

Long way to go and many complicated hurdles but . . . since I'm a Pirates fan . . . fingers are crossed that it ends up being a step in the right direction.

On the same topic, AT&T Pittsburgh supposedly came up short with a payment to the Pirates and that contract is now in jeopardy.

What's bad is AT&T pretty much has a monopoly.
Where are the Pirates going to go?

That's a good question but with streaming relevant now maybe it's time for the Pirates to try something different.

This is an industry issue. Cable stations are dying in general. Streaming is king. Like newspapers and radio before which were really prevelant but have a gone the way of the dodo.

I agree with No. 9 we could see some changes but I don't believe NY, LA and Chicago will ever share that money even though the Pirates are a big reason along with other teams that those contracts are so lucrative.

I hope this Bally Sports bankruptcy finally pushes things to be competitive for the entire league.

I won't get excited yet.

I still remember the Red Sox crying about the Pirates draft strategy under Huntington. Can't upset the big guys.

That's where I am. Would be great for baseball. But I am not holding my breath.
