Out of Options

Post by Ralphie »

Does anybody know where you can find info on who has options left vs. who does not?

I heard some guys on the radio saying it would be hard to predict the Pirates 26 man roster. I was thinking it would actually be easy, at least to come within 1 or 2 players of it. But you need to know who has options.

Thanks BB, that's good stuff.

Now that I see that, the options aren't going to factor in very much, because almost anyone who might be on the bubble has options left. So the 26 man roster is a little harder to predict than I thought it would be.

It looks like a nice group of players, but then I always think that this time of year. Hopefully I'll still feel that way in June.

I read that Dejong, Underwood and Stephenson all have no options left. The link says 0 left for DeJong and Underwood, but n/a for Stephenson.
I think 1 or 2 of those 3 guys will be waived. I would love to see your 26 man projection once you figure it out.

Here is what I have, plus Delay or Heineman as the backup catcher. De Jong was really good last year. To cut Underwood or Stephenson after holding on to them all this time doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

By the way Kranick will be going on the 60 day IL soon so a roster spot will be coming open.

Carlos Santana
Ji-Man Choi
Austin Hedges
Rodolfo Castro
Oneil Cruz
Ji Hwan Bae
Ke'Bryan Hayes
Andrew McCutchen
Bryan Reynolds
Connor Joe
Jack Suwinski
Cal Mitchell
Jarlín García
Robert Stephenson
Duane Underwood Jr.
Chase De Jong
Wil Crowe
David Bednar
Dauri Moreta
Jose Hernandez
Rich Hill
Vince Velasquez
JT Brubaker
Mitch Keller
Roansy Contreras

I think De Jong and Stephenson are slam dunks. Underwood would be the only casualty but I am not opposed to keeping him. If he wins a spot, so be it. Veteran arms usually are a plus.

Thanks for the list Ralphie.

I think reliever Yerry De Los Santos, starter Yohan Oviedo and starter Luis Ortiz all looked really good at times last year. I think Yerry will get forced to begin the year in the minors. I hope they can find a way to get Oviedo on the roster as a long man or 6th starter. I am afraid even if Ortiz is ready, he will get the treatment Roansy got last year.

I thought Underwood was kind of on the bubble as far as his roster spot, but since they kept him this long, it would kind of tick me off to see him get cut in March when we could have protected Blake Sabol.

A whole group of our most talented players will start in AAA. Davis, Rodriguez, Oviedo, Ortiz, Priester, Burrows. They will all play in the majors this year.

The fifth outfielder and the 7th or 8th reliever are certainly up for debate, but for the most part I think the 26 man roster is predictable.

Anyways I know roster management is an inexact science. You win some you lose some.
