Before you answer this, we know Nutting is cheap.
But is Bryan Reynolds worth a $120m contract for the Pirates? I am talking from the baseball standpoint. If you would invest that kind of money, is he the type of player you can build around?

I was guessing the contract was 5 years $100-$120 million range.
That takes him to age 33.

I think Jason Bay is a good comparison. Bay had his best seasons with the Pirates in 2005 and 2006. He still was a pretty good outfielder when he was traded to Boston in 2008. In the 2009, he was an all-star for the Red Sox. After that at age 31, he signed with the Mets and basically went downhilll from there.

Shouldn't this say they were $50 million apart? I might have misunderstood it, but I took it to say the Pirates offered over $70 million and Reynolds was asking for at least $120 million.Dan_Stonerook wrote: ↑Wed Jan 04, 2023 5:57 am https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/01/ ... talks.html

Re: Reynolds And Pirates $70 Million Off
In my opinion, he is a solid piece that is needed in a championship team. He is not a superstar that you build around. Because the Pirates are so young, he is definitely affordable for the next 5 or 6 years at $20 million a year, but after that the Pirates will have other guys that need to get paid. It doesn't make sense for Reynolds to agree on only a 6 year contract where he has to be a free agent again at age 33. I am guessing they are not far apart on the dollars per year, but they are off on the number of years. From the info out there, I am not blaming either side on this one.

Bryan Reynolds is like every other player; really every other human when you get right down to it. He's worth what the market bears. Thirty teams vie for his services. Is there one out there who thinks he's worth it? Because if the answer is 'yes,' that's all it takes. If all 30 say 'no,' then he's not.
As for the last question, I would say 'probably not,' but I'm not that's the best question to ask. I think the more applicable question is, "Can he be a contributing player to a team's success?" I think that answer is "absolutely yes."
The Pirates are a team that will never build around Reynolds. They just will not. To think otherwise is naive.
But, a team like the Yankees, by adding Reynolds, can make it difficult on opponents to match their everyday roster. The teams that are interested in Reynolds aren't looking at him to be that key draw.

120m isn’t franchise cornerstone money, that would be the 300m+ players.

Well, that ends that. If $300 mil's the going rate for franchise cornerstones, we might get stones, but there won't be any corners.

Reynolds isnt a franchise cornerstone type of player though.GreenWeenie wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 10:28 pm Well, that ends that. If $300 mil's the going rate for franchise cornerstones, we might get stones, but there won't be any corners.![]()
