WIll Derek Shelton manage the team differently when/if the team has a competitive roster? As a fan, it's impossible for us to know what the reasoning is behind a managers decision when managing a young, non-competitive team. Example being...bringing in Crowe, once again, to pitch the 9th inning against the Yankees, no matter how much Crowe has proved he fails in that roll. With a 4 run lead, I don't know if I have a problem bringing him in, but I have major problem with KEEPING him in. Was Shelton trying to "instill confidence" in Crowe? When will there be a priority in winning every game instead of making decisions to effect the future?
The 2011 and 2012 teams lacked depth.
They were competitive.
This year's team has overall been competitive.
This year was about individual progress.
They are close.
An AJ Burnett and Russell Martin type of guys away from competing?
In my opinion, the Pirates are calculated and strategic in what they are doing with each individual player. I also think they are the same way in how they are playing their prospects. The priority on winning I believe has to start next year. Part of what makes players great in any sport is their competitive attitude and fight to win. Many of these players have it or had it. I would like to see with us play with an attitude next year and be ready for the play-offs the next year.
