Not to jump to anything, but the Pirates are 4.5 games back of a Wild Card Spot.

Not to jump to anything either, but we are 5 1/2 games out of last place too.

I really, really, REALLY hope Cherington and Shelton observe that the improved play - the solid defense, good baserunning, good pitching, serial competitive games - came because the younger players received playing time. Pirates are not 24-28 without Suwinski, Marcaro, Castillo, Contreras, and Crowe.

Let Swaggerty play CF. He is a plus-defender who has been red hot in Indianapolis. Put Reynolds in LF, leave SuWINski in RF, Hayes at 3B, Castillo at SS, Marcaro at 2B. C and 1B are just going to have to wait. Keep Roansy in the rotation with Zack Thompson and Brubaker. Quintana is getting dealt next month. Hope he continues to produce and gets a solid return. Is it what it is.

Reminds me a bit of the 1987 Pirates, around July, when they had a young, improving team with Bream, Bonilla, Bonds, Van Slyke, Drabek, and Smiley start winning games. Lots of fun to watch.

Beats the living hell out of rooting for washed-up guys like Jeremy Beernutz to do something other than ground out to 2B AGAIN.
