The Pittsburgh Pirates signed their fifth top-100 prospect from the MLB Draft, when Texarkana, Ark., prep outfielder Braylon Bishop agreed to a $268,700 bonus Tuesday.

Bishop was ranked the No. 87 prospect by Baseball America and No. 94 by MLB Pipeline — making him a third-round talent — but slipped to the 14th round (No. 403 overall) because of concerns he would honor his college scholarship to Arkansas, where he committed as a 15-year-old.

I believe that leaves the only unsigned player left pitcher Owen Kellington. I am not sure exactly what they have left to spend, but I think it is close to his slot value. I am guessing around a half million.

Kellington is the first player in program history to receive the Gatorade award, which recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary character.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior right-handed pitcher and shortstop led the Raiders to a 14-3 record and the Division II state championship this spring, the East Montpelier school's first baseball crown.

The Major League Baseball prospect who attracted a bevy of professional scouts to his games, Kellington went 7-0 with a 0.22 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 49 innings of work. Of his recorded outs, 91% came via the strikeout.

At the plate, the lefty-swinging Kellington batted .667 with eight home runs, 32 runs and 26 RBIs.
I believe the Pirates only have until tomorrow to sign this guy (Owen Kellington). I believe the Pirates have $600K left without having to lose any picks. Has anyone heard any updates?

If one is looking for silver linings this year, Cherington’s draft and draft signings is certainly one of them.

My how this guy has fallen. He was the consensus No. 1 pick going into the college season and now, he doesn't have a contract offer. I am sure someone will eventually sign him. He is a Scott Boras, who is very good at his job even though he is an jerk, client. Going to be interesting to follow.

I thought I heard it said the Pirates were able to sign 19 of their 21 picks.

It was an impressive draft.

I think the Pirates signed 4 of the top available 32 ranked players in the draft. They also signed the #85 guy in the draft. The Pirates also spent 5% over their allotted money. This means they not only spent an extra 3/4 of a million, but had to spend a luxury tax of over a half million. Not a lot of money in the baseball world, but it has been in the Prates world. What a great draft by Cherington and his staff. (Here six months ago, I thought Kumar Rocker was a slam dunk.)
