Moreta pitched in double A and triple A in 2021.
He was 6 an 0 53 innings 31 hits 9 walks and a 1.02 ERA. The bad news is he was below average. I might be wrong, but I think this trade opens a spot on the 40 man roster if the Pirates want to pursue one of the nontendered players.

Monetary would have to be added to 40 man roster. He pitched for Cincy last season. His ERA is inflated from 10 HR's in 38 innings.

Hate to see Newman go, but there is for sure a logjam of infielders for us now. If Moreta can return to his 2021 form, this could be a coup for us. At least the guy does not have to pitch in the bandbox that is Great American, so he has a better chance to correct his long ball problem.

You can be sure our FO saw his home/away splits and were encouraged
Home Games 6.56 ERA 23.1 IP 24 Hits 7 HR's given up .264 BAA 1.33 WHIP
Away Games 3.60 ERA 15.0 IP 8 Hits 3 HR's given up .160 BAA 0.93 WHIP

He also pitched much better in the second half of the season
1.54 ERA 11.2IP 6 Hits .158 BAA 0.86 WHIP

A 4 pitch guy who hits 96.

If he can correct the long ball issue and gets some more groundballs, he could be a solid bullpen guy.
He also has a few option years left.

So much for that then.

I wonder if the fact that Newman was arbitration eligible had anything to do with the trade?

Absolutely, Newman is in line for a salary of about 2.8 million and the Pirates of course did not want to pay that. They are always looking to build a roster on the cheap.
