Weird Game...but nice win. Lots of offense, but not much of it led to runs. Most of the runs were due to Detroit's poor defense. Four runs in a game and only 1 RBI. Weird.

STARTER: Burnett goes 6 innings, just 2 hits, 3 BB. No runs, and 4 K's. Leaves the game with a 4-0 lead! He won his seventh start in a row...ties a Pirate record. When this trade was made, who wouldda thunk that Burnett could be this good for the Bucs. I would have liked another inning, but with our pen, fresh from last night's complete game, it really wasn't necessary. Great Start!

WIN: Burnett gets the win to go to 8-2 with 3.24 ERA. Good enough to be an All Star?

HOLD: Watson and Grilli get holds. Is there a better set up guy than Grilli in the league? Good enough to be an All Star?

SAVE: Hanrahan gets save # 18! Good enough to be an All Star?

STAR #3: Although he really did not figure in the scoring at all, Cutch gets 3 hits for the second straight night. Amazing to get three hits and not be the #1 star, but tonight was all about the pitching! Incidentally, Cutch's average is up to .346. Definately good enough to be an All Star. With Kemp on the shelf, Cutch is best CF in the league.

STAR #2: Giving #2 star to Tony Watson. He came in when Hughes got into a little trouble. Tying run was at the plate, and Watson got a big strikeout.

STAR #1: Burnett was instrumental in this win....gets the #1 Star.

Honorable Mention: Presley gets the Bucs going in the first with a leadoff double and scores the first run. Walker gets just one hit, but drives in the first run to get the Bucs going...ended up being the only RBI of the game. Barajas goes 2-3 and scores a run. Pedro goes 1-2, plus a walk and run scored.

STANDINGS
Cutch 60
Burnett 50.5
McDonald 49.5

Take out the dreadful 2.2 inning, 12 run start....AJ Burnett would now have an ERA of 1.86, best in the NL!!! Burnett has given up 27 earned runs all year...12 in that one start. Crazy!!!

There are 4 legitimate All Star players on this team this year...obviously (MVP candidate) Andrew McCutchen, AJ Burnett, JMac and Hanrahan. Wow! How many will actually make it though?

...and with a little better BA's Barajas and Pedro would be candidates. I also think Walker is among the best 2b in the league. It's gonna be a fun summer!

I forgot to mention that Pedro has most HR among NL 3b and among the leaders in RBI and doubles.

The interesting thing is that while the offense was historically bad early on, it has actually been above league average (for Runs Scored) since their hot run started on May 25th. Since then they are averaging 4.68 runs per game against an NL average of 4.16 for the year. Amazing what a little bit of help from Pedro, Casey and Barajas (the guys that have been improving the most since then).

YEP...it was way to early for fans to be hitting the panic button and writing off some of these guys... now if Barmes is still not doing anything by the All Star Break, then I think it's time for a change.

I am just as pleased as everyone else with the recent performance from the team. BUT the exception is Barmes. Even when he gets three hits in a game, only one is legit-- one was a bad call and another was an error that wasn't called. Hurdle has been great selecting who to play all year but in this case it's way past time to move on.

Harrison's defense at SS has surprised me. I would like to see him get a straight week of starts at SS to see what happens.

Same here. Harrison was a big part of the early season success last season too. He has a certain "It" factor.
