Most of these guys are pulled after 90 pitches this time of year. Plus you need to score.

That doesn't bother me in the first start of the year.

Holy smokes, this is the worst offensive lineup in baseball. Yuck.

1 run, 6 hits in 18 innings...ugh! Looks like another long year.

With the sudden explosion of the M's offense (Chone Figgins lives?!) it's not out of the question.

Of course, there are the A's... (who may also be the worst defensive bunch, neck and neck with Detroit).

the phillies arn't hitting much better, and they don't have the excuse of hitting against halliday and lee, they got bedard and karstens, look at the bright side, the pitching has been great and the hitting should get a little better once they are not facing elite cy young winners

1.) Phillies get two men on with no outs in the first inning
2.) Their #3 hitter (Rollins) lays down a perfect bunt and moves both runners over to 3B and 2B
3.) The Phils then proceed to get an infield hit (Pence) and score the runner from 3B.
4.) Early one run lead by playing small ball from a very good offensive team.

A scenario that sounds familiar? If the Phils can do it, the Pirates should be able to do it...especially the Pirates who are offensively challenged...

The main difference being that Andrew McCutchen is a genuine No. 3 hitter, while Rollins has no business batting there.

Looked like runs were going to be hard to come by, so I had no problem with it, especially since the first was such a long inning.

I would of let him go 7, but our pen held strong. GREAT WIN!

Now let's take the series! Have a happy Easter everyone!

You must have forgotten the secret sauce to making Karstens effective: limiting his pitch count. Feel free to review Karstens' work last year and take note of how effective he was after 90 pitches, as well as how often Hurdle allowed him to throw more than 100 pitches.

Bingo. Previously, Karstens was Type A material through 6, and a train wreck shortly thereafter. He's the prototypical modern starter: Throw 6 and call it a day.

Amen Pirate 1218. This bitching disgusts me. Bucs were going against two of the top pitchers in the league. I will take a split regardless of how many hits and runs we get. Not to mention. Bedard and Karstens did every bit what Halladay and Lee did. Good start to the season. I will take it!

I agree with pulling Karsten's at this time of year.

But, to use last year as a barometer of his pitch count is missing one very key factor. He was not a starter at the start of last year. His ST was not geared to being a starter. His offseason was not geared to being a starter.

I expect you won't see that problem this year. I expect to see Karsten develop as most other starters would this year.

I thought last season Karstens was monitored more closely due to him being in his first real starting role where this year he would be used to it. Regardless gem of a game yesterday. He has really transformed himself into a damn fine pitcher.

I was having beers with McKenry's brother here in Knoxville last night and all of a sudden he cheered. Michael had just scored the winning run. He was wearing a really cool Pirates t shirt. :)
