Wow, Diaz in the line-up let alone batting fourth is curious to me. There must be something about Garret Jones that rubs Hurdle the wrong way. I know Jones hasn't hit lefties this year either, but at least he's shown some life at the plate at times. I will pray for strikeouts again for Diaz I guess (rather than the DPs he seems to love to hit into).

Diaz is hitting .268 against lefties. Jones is hitting .156 against lefties. I know BA isn't the tell-all and Diaz has been disappointment, but there is a reason he was brought here and there is a reason he should stay for now.

yeah, but Diaz's OPS vs. lefties is .631, that's Cedeno territory right there, not to mention more than triple the amount of ABs that Jones has gotten vs. lefties.

I didn't say he was good. I was saying he is the best option from this roster tonight.

I guess one of my main points is that Diaz is costing us games by sucking, AND by playing stupid. For a veteran, his talent is eroding, but his baseball smarts are surely not making up for it. Jones at least plays a decent brand of baseball, and can throw in the occassional home-run, even vs. left-handed pitchers. (12 of 42 career are against lefties). I liked the idea of the platoon, but it's time to let it go Clint.

Yeah, I'm aware but that's 31 ABs. Diaz has had over 100. Jones could get better, Diaz I don't think so.

Anyway, gotta go to class. Don't get me wrong, I would love for Diaz to unmelt, and/or find the cure to whatever disease he has, but I cringe to see him #4 tonight in a game the Bucs should win.

psub ... Jones has had some downright ugly at-bats against left-handers this season. Huntington and Hurdle recognize that Jones just cannot hit left-handers, at all.

He has value for how he hits right-handers, but playing him against left-handers is just not the way to go. In comparison, the pitcher's spot would be the only batter remotely close to how well Jones does against left-handed pitching (.129/.156/.161 for an OPS of .318).

Let me repeat - Jones' OPS against lefties is .318. That is awful.

Perhaps the better exercise is to find an alternative to Diaz as the platoon partner for Jones. Someone who makes his living as a lefty-masher should be hitting better than Diaz.

That little Harrison puts quite a charge into the ball. He took that other way nicely.

Bob Walk is talking it up because Karstens gives up solo home runs instead of walks.

Unfortunately, he just gave up two solo home runs and the score is tied.

And the worst part it is the Pirates crummy offense won't score enough runs to win the game.

Pirate pitchers have to pitch shutout games in order to win. Maholm knows all about that.

And just like that Diaz gets an RBI single off of Octavio (Don't ask) Dotel!
