I did not like Hurdles managing tonight. I think he should have left Maholm in the game. He was cruising and then you only let him pitch 7 innings. Also, why not pinch hit for Xavier Paul with the bases loaded and 1 out in the bottom of the 8th. Paul looked like a AA player during that AB.

The bullpen has been pretty good, the setup man and closer are there purposes like tonight.

Also, Hurdle probably had the thought of his last outing against the Mets in his head when Paul was in there a little too long and blew a 7-0 lead.

Paul doesnt have the velocity that Veras, Wood, Watson, and Hanrahan have...They saw 'soft' stuff all night and saw him 3 times already tonight. "Give'em the heat Ricky"

I hate that we basically have to pitch perfect every night or else we lose.

Just hold on until Doumit and Alvarez are back in the line-up.

Every win ... every 3-1 or 2-0 win ... that keeps the team near .500 until those two hitters return, is a step towards a winning season.

Having Doumit and Alvarez being back in the lineup won't mean jack until they can prove they can hit as well. :(

Pedro needs to get his shit together when he returns, agreed. But I'd much rather see him up there taking at bats, for good or bad, than seeing Brandon Wood. I guess we can see it as a positive that we're winning games without Pedro in the lineup. Most of the elite third basemen in the league have been on and off injured this season, so at least we're not alone in our barren production from third.

Doumit was hitting before he was hurt ... Alvarez hit in the minors and last September.

Look at it this way - Doumit and Alvarez have to give the team more offense than Dusty Brown and Brandon Wood.

Yeah, seriously. I have much more faith in Pedro turning it around than I do in Brandon Wood ever becoming a productive every-day player. And Doumit's problems have never been at the plate, they've been behind the plate, or anywhere else they play him, along with his major problem, of simply staying healthy.

Doumit had a little streak in May, but was really hit or miss for most of the season. He was batting .268. Decent, but nothing spectacular.

As far as Pedro goes, I don't care if he was hitting last season. This year, he's been a K machine.

This is really just a cycle fans go through. Player A struggles, they call for him to be sat or go to the minors to "work things out". Player A gets hurt, goes to the DL, his replacements struggle, and, suddenly, he's the cure to all their problems. There's no reason to suspect that Player A is going to step in and be that cure, but that doesn't stop them.

Pedro's going to be a K machine regardless, he just wasn't providing the contact to go along with it. It's one thing to K a lot, it's another to wiff on strikes constantly, like he was doing. It's hard to believe a trend like that will continue with him. He's had a lottttt of time to sit back and see just why he wasn't making contact. Hopefully he'll make those adjustments. If we had a consistent power bat in the lineup all year, we'd probably have 10 more wins at this point.

Agreed: Alvarez wasn't exactly tearing it up before the injury.
