Wow, welcome to Pittsburgh McKenny! Talk about being thrown into the fire, I like it.

I hate not seeing Cutch in there. I understand Clint Hurdle giving him a rest (even though he's 6 for 12 lifetime against Pelfrey), but #22 has been about 50% of the Pirates' offense of late...

Is that Sergei Gonchar or Larry Murphy catching for the Bucs?

Bucs get a break on that one. Tabata thrown out clean at third, but Reyes called for obstruction on the basepaths when he just stepped out of the way.

This team certainly can't afford it.

Don't think this changes anything, Wood. You're still a scrub.

Anyone know off the top of their head how many lead off walks Veras has allowed in close games? I know of at least 3.

I don't have an exact figure, but I'd some somewhere between a lot and too many.

I can also recall him twice walking someone to load the bases.

Anyone else for sending X-Paul down and bringing Presley up? If he doesn't pass through waivers, so what? What can Paul do that Presley can't?

This hasn't been Paul's best game, but I think he's been more consistent at the plate than Jones and Diaz. Of the three, I think Diaz should go down, if possible.

Raise it!!

One thing I really, REALLY like about Hurdle - he uses the "hot" reliever until he is not hot any more and then moves on to the guy that is.

Case in point ... Resop was hot, used him, then not, moved on to Veras.

Veras was hot, used him, now he's not, move on to Wood.

Wood is hot, still hot, use him.

Watson is hot, use him.

Short relievers benefit from not having been seen. Wood and Watson can deal, and to batters not used to them, advantage - pitcher.

Just for the record, the Pirates did not win their 32nd game last year until July 18 -- three days after the All-Star break. After 65 games, they were 23-42 and in the midst of a 12-game losing streak.
