Tough one for Charlie. Meek blew it. Maybe Resop should become the eighth inning guy. He was awesome tonight.

I'm getting tired of a struggling (to the point where the official site posted a story about his illness recently) Meek pitching in 1 and 2 run games just because he has the "set-up man" title. He can't even throw strikes right now, and comes into the 1-run game with a 4.50 ERA and 5 BBs in 8 innings pitched.

I'm not just overreacting to tonight's outcome nor am I giving up on Meek in April. But he's the worst guy in the bullpen right now, and it's frustrating to watch a guy blow games just because he has a useless title in the bullpen class system. He blew the Cubs loss and would have blown the Reds game had Hanrahan not bailed him out with a 5-out save.

Let me give the goats now. Meek. Hanrahan. Walker.

They let one f'n guy beat them. Some no-name who should be an Olympic sprinter, not a baseball player.

Totally disgusting.

Cedeno doesn't run out a nubber down the 3rd base line and Walker falls asleep at 2nd that allows a run to score in the 10th. Ugh.

Can we swear on this board because Im about to? What Cedeno did in the bottom of the 9th without running a ball out and stopping makes me sick. He should be released ASAP. Walker and his candy ass arm cost them a run and probably the game. Shame on you Neil Walker, you POS! My grandmother could have thrown that ball harder to 1st base.

Not so much Hanrahan. His only real mistake was letting the guy get to 3rd after his arrant pick off. He should have been out of the inning.

Time for Tabata and Cutch to salvage a victory!

Not only did he nonchalant it to second, he double clutched. Just a major mental lapse.

And Cedeno should be back on the bench tomorrow. No way Hurdle can play him after that. Why are you even looking at the ball Ronny? Little leaguers are taught that.

This is how the Giants won a championship last year. Winning games they have no business winning.

Oh, Diaz too. How that wasn't scored an error on him is beyond me. It didn't matter because the baserunner was erased, but he needs to keep that ball in front of him.

That was one of the ugliest losses in recent memory ... which is saying a lot for a team like the Pirates.

The situation where you throw away a pickoff, get a soft grounder and are about to get out of the inning.

Uhhh, no. What the hell was with the lob to first? The guy on third does one - ONE - thing well. He runs fast.

Nothing else. Nothing. So, make sure to get the ball to Overbay quickly.

Agreed.

If the guy bunts the runner to second, the Giants need a base hit to score.

It looked like the Schierholz flare was going to be the hardest hit ball they were going to manage against Hanrahan. The chances that they get a genuine base hit and win the game ... not very good.

Two things:

1. I'm not starting another game thread until the Pirates win at least three games in a row.

2. Watching what Ford did tonight reminded me why I wanted the Pirates to have a guy like Wimberly on the bench. Speed literally won that game for the Giants. I'd like the Pirates to have a guy like that, if possible.

Walker messed up the throw, yeah...but you cannot possibly lump him in with Cedeno!

Bucco Boy -
You and I normally see things through the same colored glasses but Diaz's snafu was huge and it mattered big time. The dynamics markedly changed. If he holds Scheurholz to a single, what is Ford going to do? He is likely going to bunt Scheurholz to second. There would be one out with a decent runner on second base. I give Hanrahan a decent chance of shutting them down in that situation.

Instead, Scheurholz is nailed at third and the Human Flash is on the basepaths. You know darn well that Ford was going to be running. I have grave doubts that Snyder would have successfully thrown him out. So . . . even if Hanrahan doesn't throw away the pickoff, Ford is likely on second base with one out.

So . . . if Diaz plays smart, you likely have Scheurholz at second with one out.
Diaz doesn't play smart, Hanrahan doesn't throw ball away, you likely have Ford on second with one out.
Diaz doesn't play smart, Hanrahan gags and you have Ford at third with one out.

I take Option #1 every freaking day of the week and twice on Sundays. It was a flat out bone head, stupid play by Diaz and, IMO, set the tone for everything that happened afterwards. I'm not excusing Hanrahan's bad throw or Walker's complacency. Not at all. But . . . we likely wouldn't be writing about this if Diaz had simply done his job.

As for Meek . . . uuuugh.

My $.02 on the deal and I'm still disgusted . . . .

This one was like listening to NO. 1's games he pitched this year. Good outing by the starter. Bullpen gives it up. Errors seal the loss.

Errors happen. I'm OK with that. But the failure to play SMART in that fatal inning is what is disappointing -- and so reminiscent of the Russell years.

Neil HAD to laser that throw to 1st, and Overbay had to be anticipating that Ford would take off. Had they both just played smart, the game would have continued.

And in the 8th inning, when Ford tried to steal (or maybe a hit-n-run with Freddy), why was Cedeno covering? Shouldn't Walker have been covering with a righty at bat? So instead of getting the out on a weak grounder directly to the standard SS position (with Ford at Second, needing a hit to score), Cedeno vacated to result in 1st and 3rd.

But hey, we're still only 2 games out in the ever-important loss column, and I take another strong positive off another good Charlie outing. So let's keep our heads up and work to win the series.
