And, just for good measure, Alvarez boots a grounder. Nice.

Olson actually pitched pretty well, though. 1 and 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball with no hits and a walk.

Nah. The Reds would still be better because of their pitching. But that would be one sweet lineup for the Bucs...

Huh?

Edinson "100 pitches in the 4th inning" Volquez?

Johnny "Hey, guess what, I'm missing yet ANOTHER start" Cueto?

Homer "I killed in the minors but always post a 4.85 ERA when it counts" Bailey?

Their starting pitching will betray them this year.

Close contest, currently tied 2-2 ...

The contest between hits and errors, I mean. Geez, I can't believe I wasted DVR space recording this bowel movement of a game.

39,219 in attendance today. That's the second-largest crowd in PNC Park history. Nice showing, Bucco fans.

Unless it's against the Pirates...His career ERA not counting games against the Pirates is probably close to 7!!

I think they just stunk today. Pitching, hitting, defense were all disappointing. Tomorrow is another day. Hopefully they don't let this game linger.

I'd like to see Alvarez wake up from hibernation tomorrow night. The kid's now got 10 Ks without a single walk on the year, and he only has one extra base hit. C'mon, Pedro.

Today's game is a prime reason that you let it go and play again tomorrow. That's baseball. 8-) 8-) 8-)

It wasn't ALL bad. The Chuck Tanner Tribute before the game was great!
The Quaker Stake N Lube in the 2nd was good...as was the Primanti's in the 7th!

There's the slow starter reputation he has, but wow, he couldn't really be worse than what he's been. A big bat that doesn't walk, doesn't get big hits, and K's twice a game at least, is useless.

The game is about adjustments. Alvarez has to make pitchers pay for missing their spots. So far, he hasn't. Even his game-winning two-RBI single was a cued dribbler that just evaded the pitcher, and the second RBI on that play was more about Walker's hustle.

#24 has to get it in gear.

I think he needs to be more aggressive early in the count. TO my eyes there has been a few first pitch strikes that were very hittable. 8-) 8-)

For reasons that escape us average baseball fans, Alvarez does indeed seem to take a first-pitch fastball right down the middle for strike 1. He then offers at the breaking ball in the dirt to go 0-2.

If pitchers think they can simply chuck a fastball down the middle to get ahead, hit the ball off the fence. Then, the pitchers will need to shoot for a corner or throw a first-pitch breaking ball, leading to more 1-0 counts.
