Ah, Opening Day at PNC Park.

Image

I'll let Dejan Kovacevic set the scene for the 2011 home opener:

Today is for baseball.

It's for Chuck Tanner to be recognized before the first pitch.

It's for the traditional introduction of the players along the third-base line.

It's for Walker, Pittsburgh's own, to experience that for the first time. As a player, anyway.

It's for the Legend to go deep in his first two at-bats.

It's for Clint Hurdle to begin making his connection to the community.

It's for Paul Maholm to go hard in the home opener he wanted so badly.

Above all, it's for the Pirates' season-ticket holders, a group that -- for all kinds of quantifiable reasons -- is unlike any in all of professional sports.

It's for the hope those people have, no matter how irrational or short-lived. The one thing no one can take away from any fan anywhere is hope on opening day, and yes, that applies, too, to those who follow a team with 18 consecutive losing seasons and a 57-105 predecessor.

Paul Maholm will deal the first pitch at approximately 1:35 p.m.

Let's Go Bucs!

Pittsburgh Pirates (3-2)

1. Tabata LF
2. Walker 2B
3. McCutchen CF
4. Overbay 1B
5. Alvarez 3B
6. Doumit C
7. Jones RF
8. Cedeno SS
9. Maholm P (0-0)

Colorado Rockies (3-1)

1. Fowler CF
2. Spilborghs RF
3. Gonzalez LF
4. Tulowitzki SS
5. Lopez 2B
6. Helton 1B
7. Wigginton 3B
8. Iannetta C
9. Rogers P (0-0)

Due to my pesky profession, I won't be around for a good chunk of the middle of the game. Yinz keep it goin' here for me, though.

Well, that put a damper on the party.

Well, Walker costs the Bucs two runs by throwing away a force out at second. A run scores from first and the hitter, Gonzalez, got all the way to third. Tulowitzki followed with a deep sacrifice fly to McCutchen.

2-0 Rockies after the top of the 1st.

Walker makes up for it with a single moving Tabata to 3rd, then stole 2nd...runners in scoring position, no outs for McCutchen

If he hit a homer, he would have made up for his two-run error. He's getting there, though.

FYI -- no stolen base for Walker, he broke for second after the ball bounced to the catcher.

Jim Tracy AND Ty Wigginton. But don't worry, Kip Wells isn't warming up in their bullpen.

Watching the Rockies feed. Announcer Drew Goodman pronounced Tabata as "Tuh-BOT-uh". I think his partner, George Frazier, got it right. Waiting for Tabata's next AB to see how they deal with it.

Maholm is definitely turning into a gopher ball pitcher. Wasn't being a ground ball pitcher his positive?

A seven-pitch inning for the Rockies hurler. Got make it a little tougher on him, Bucs.

The guy's given up one earned run in 11 2/3 innings so far. Sure, he's given up some long fly balls today, but c'mon, this game should be tied at 1 right now.

I am basing my assessment on the fact he gave up a ton of home runs in spring training as well. It's just surprising.

Rogers technically has a no-hitter through 5 innings. Hits to the first two Buccos, nothing since.

The defense has been brutal. Walker's error and now Jones plays a single into a double for Spilborghs.

Defense is spotty, but the hitting on non-freaking-existent.

Getting irritated at back-end pitchers mowing down the Pirates. For God's sake, could they put together a multiple run inning????

These Rockies can hit.

Man, I'd love to have a guy like Tulowitzki playing shortstop for the Pirates...
