Hurdle set up the line-up with a R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L motif (obviously, noting that Walker and Doumit are switch hitters).

I have always liked setting up a line-up with alternating right and left-handed hitters for the simple reason that the opposition cannot have a lefty reliever face 2 or 3 left-handed hitters in a row.

Anybody watch somehow? Morton's and Lincoln's lines look good. Of course, it's only 2 innings each.

I hope McCutchen hitting third is short lived.

Sisy, just curious why and where you would want McCutchen batting?

I think Tabata and Walker infront of McCutchen and Alvarez behind is going to give an opportunity to get some good pitches to hit, and a chance to drive in some runs...

I'd rather have an very good leadoff hitter than a mediocre number three man. I watched the Pirates make the same mistake with Jason Kendall for years.

Give it a season and see how he does. What's to lose? It is the perfect scenario for it. Who else has a lock on the 3 spot? 8-) 8-) 8-)

I understand that this team isn't ready to challenge for a playoff spot, but why piss away all the runs that McCutchen would score leading off? He's never going to bat third on a decent team, because teams with guys like him batting third aren't decent. Batting him third basically eliminates base stealing from his arsenal.

It would be nice to see what Tabata can do in the leadoff spot and Walker 2nd...I think Walker fits well in the 2nd spot and both of them will give McCutchen to drive in some runs and still use his speed

How about when two are out and he singles allowing him to steal second putting himself in scoring position for the 4 hole? 8-) 8-) 8-)

McCutchen will be on first with some combination of Alvarez, Jones and/or Overbay coming up. All lefties, and none of those guys is going to be taking strikes to give him a chance to steal, nor should they be. Walker has as much power as McCutchen (at least), but less speed. I like last year's top three just fine. McCutchen has a chance to develop into a great leadoff hitter. He's never going to be more than adequate batting third.

He won't be stealing. He'll be glued to first, opening up the hole for whatever lefthander is batting cleanup.

Look at Andy Van Slyke's stolen base numbers. Switch him with Bonds in the lineup and Van Slyke steals 35-40 a year instead of 15-20, and Bonds runs way, way less.
