Hmm. Our lineup tonight is not exactly "Position A". Moreso than usual.

Whether it's LaRoche or Young, Burres always falls victim to an unearned run thanks to the third basemen.

Young needs to make up that run with one swing of the bat....which means a HR or a extra base hit.

Is Jones starting to suck with RISP?

9 pitches for Burres so far in the 4th, 8 of them balls. No outs.

This guy is the flukiest pitcher I've ever seen on a consistent basis. For whatever reason, the runs usually seem to come unearned or he somehow gets out of innings. In his first win of the season, he actually threw less than half of his pitches for strikes.

Looks like this will be the game his control finally implodes in a big way.

Aaron Harang has been gang-raped by every team in the NL so far this year ... except of course for the horrendous Pirates offense. Embarrassing to get shut down by a guy with a 6 ERA.

Just as embarrassing as walking the first two batters of an inning on 9 pitches, then after getting a double play, allow an RBI to the pitcher (after getting behind him 3-0).

Not giving the offense a pass, but don't let the fact that Burres couldn't throw a single strike go unnoticed. Harang is a quality pitcher having an unusually bad year, so it's not shocking that he would put together a nice outing. I said it before the season, and I guess it's pretty evident now: the Reds have one of the most underrated staffs in the league.

Not true, Shark. Harang has been awful for the past three seasons, going 14-36 since the beginning of the 2008 season, with a combined ERA of about 4.60. In that time, Harang has given up 458 hits in 399 innings, including an astounding 69 HR's.

That is truly awful, Shark.

Since when is a 4.60 ERA in three seasons "awful"? It's not ideal, but it's very far from "awful". That's about in line with the Pirates' best SP's career ERA.

I never said he was great, I said he was quality, which he is. Maybe it floors you that he could put together a nice day, but it doesn't me. When you look at that record, consider the Reds' ball clubs the last few seasons. In 2006 I believe it was, he led the NL in strikeouts and complete games. And that's just it: he throws strikes. He would be welcomed on many staffs.

And I'm sure Shark that the Pirates have helped Harang's career more so than any other team.......if I were just guessing and not checking the stats.

Not awful enough for our purposes.

I'm not too disappointed with the offense vs. Harang. We did put up 5 runs. There was a point there where 4 out of 5 guys lined out to outfielders.

Just to take the middle road, I'd say he's been somewhere better than awful and worse than quality in the last three seasons. His ERA+ in 2008 and 2009 was 93 (slightly below average) and 102 (very slightly above). As Bucfan pointed out, he gave up a ton of homers, but he had a K/BB ratio of 3, which is pretty solid. He has been terrible so far this year. I'd still probably take him on the Pirates.

When I watch Harang, I see what Dan McCutch probably should be. Both good (strike thrower) and bad (eminently hittable)

And McCutchen, like Harang, is a fly ball pitcher who has been plagued with HR's over his career.

P.S. If you want to know how good Aaron Harang is, go check the Reds' message boards. Reds fans are, shall we say, not enamored with Harang. So Shark, take no affront from my comments. Harang should not turn into harangue.*

* harangue: –noun
1. a scolding or a long or intense verbal attack; diatribe.
2. a long, passionate, and vehement speech, esp. one delivered before a public gathering.
3. any long, pompous speech or writing of a tediously hortatory or didactic nature; sermonizing lecture or discourse.
