He can hit. He isn't.

I guess with this theory then we can say John Van Benscoten is still just in a slump in the major leagues because he has proven he can pitch, as a minor leaguer.

Adam Hyzdu and Chad Hermanson hit as minor leaguers too...as well as hundreds of other players who never cut it at the big league level.

C'mon ZM...give it a rest. This guy hasn't proven squat at the major league level. And a month and a half is a long slump...especially to start the season.

A solid contributor?
He is the Pirates starting 3rd baseman. He has only 5 extra base hits and 7 rbis. He is batting 290 something? If you throw a team of 9 andy laroches out there it will be a losing team. Why are you acting like we have the next Ryne Sanderg? Laroche would not start on alot of other Major League teams. Of course once again you take a 25 game sample, and totally discount the fact that in close to 300 games he has batted 236 with a 678 obp.
You want to just throw out players who are not producing at all until they have a good stretch. Then you praise them and management like a bunch of geniuses.
Also the people on this board make Laroche seem like a gold glove 3rd baseman and he has 6 errors in 26 games this year. Only fielding 933.

I stand by what I wrote. He's been a solid contributor this season, not an all star, but a solid contributor. His current OPS puts him in the middle of the pack among MLB 3rd basemen for the season. Among 2nd basemen, he'd be tenth. His bat projects well at 2nd base if he can handle the position defensively (which, I admit, is not certain). Plus, when you look at the big picture, his performance at the plate is trending upward which is what you want and expect from a young player.

To be fair, I don't believe Andy LaRoche was ever this bad

I think you're forgetting the 2nd half of the '08 season, jaybee. In 164 at bats, Laroche put up a .152/.227/.232 line. Also, he didn't get his first hit until the 8th game of the season last year. Most on this board were calling for his head on a platter.

Yep, you're right, I did forget about that. I was just looking at his first full season, which was 2009.

That is why I am hesitant to give up on Clement.

His career numbers are too good to let waste. He "looked" good at the plate early on (but then again, so did our acquisition from Boston). Looks like he is really pressing now and losing confidence.
