I know that it is a day game after a night game but (1) the Brewers are throwing a lefty (an untested lefty starting for the first time today); (2) Jaramillo is a left handed hitter; and (3) Doumit got a little mojo going last night. I would have been tempted to play him today and sit him in Game #1 in L.A.

Jaramillo is a switch-hitter, like Doumit. He went yard against Astros lefty starter on Saturday.

After getting the 3-0 cushion, Maholm proceeds to walk the lead-off batter after getting ahead 0-2, which of course leads to a HR by the next batter. A wild pitch then allowed the tying run to score.

Are we going to need an AAA call-up to have a fluke performance in order to win every game?

Maholm sucks today. He is going to get clobbered.

There's no way this horrendous stretch of pitching can continue. Maholm and Duke aren't Cy Young candidates, but they're not this terrible. Just like the pitching staff started out on fire last year and then regressed, things have to get better after this start.

I would rather see Church or Young in the OF than Jones right now.

I don't want Jones to continue to struggle, but it's hard to watch your clean-up hitter hit below .200, and it doesn't look like his power is going to be as consistent as last season.

So just like that this Chris Narveson person who only has pitched seven MLB innings turns into Cy Young? The Pirates can't get a hit now after ripping the ball and scoring 3 runs in the first. Just like that the Pirates can't hit again???

This is going to be a very very very very very looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong season.

If the Pirates can't score at least 4 runs every time Maholm and Duke start a game.....more like 5 or 6 runs.......the Pirates are going to lose the majority of the games these two knuckleheads are involved with.

That puts the pressure back on the offense. Offense? What offense?

It's once again the mechanics that do our Starting Pitchers in.

In the first, Maholm walked the lead-off batter after getting ahead 0-2. After giving up a HR, the tieing run would score on a wild pitch.

In a close game in the 7th, after getting the first two outs on a couple of pitches, he walks Braun on 4 pitches. Thankfully he would then get Fielder to pop out, but your starter allowing 5 BBs is just unsatisfactory. It will look like an okay start on paper, making it to the seventh, but he danced around a lot of innings with these control issues. Not good at all.

I had completely forgotten about Doumit being able to pinch-hit in the 9th.

I see that Church got ejected, what happened? I just see on Gameday that the strike three caught the corner, as did every single one of the strikes in the AB.

Do you think Dotel has lost the closer role yet? I really wish Hanrahan's spot hadn't come up just then in the 10th... (assuming Russell would have let him go another inning if it hadn't, which I would have voted for...)

Very gutsy win by the Buccos. They tied it in the 9th on Doumit's HR, went ahead on Cutch's bomb, gave the lead back, fought through some tough situations and pulled out a hard-fought win.

Jones' day exemplifies why patience is required in baseball. 0-5 with 4 K's in the first 9 innings. Singles in the 11th, doubles in winning run in the 14th. He was a goat for most of the game, and then turns it around to be the hero.
