What? Challenge the brilliance of the shift? Why, this is not tee-ball, and the coaches must know what they are doing ... all evidence to the contrary be damned.

Giants lead 3-0 after the 1st, this game is going about as anticipated.

To be fair, the Giants got some bloop hits, and I thought Buress was robbed of a strike 3 on the first BB. For those reasons alone, I'll keep the game on. But he is getting behind just about every batter thus proving his worth as a Pirate.

This is going to be a very long season.........again. I guess I need to wait for Alvarez to arrive, maybe Tabata and Lincoln too.

This Pirate offense is going to be miserable. The only positive of 2010 hopefully will be it being one year closer to the Pirates having a real baseball team.

Serious question: Why would you only just now be having that revelation, with the Pirates down 3-1 early in a game? I mean yeah, Buress is pitching, and I fully expect to wheels to fall of anytime now, but still. In regards to the offense, they at least mustered 6 runs in yesterday's massacre.

If you wanna watch the Giants broadcast check this link:

The picture goes away between innings but it's been working for me so far..

Giant players to one another:

"Hey, check out LF for the Pirates. They don't have anyone playing LF. That's where I'm hitting the ball. To LF."

Meanwhile......Donuts Doumit makes ANOTHER out.

Pirates right-handers with a flaccid effort against the Giants reliever. He continued to throw the slider down and away, and the Pirates hitters continued swinging and missing. None of them put the bat on the ball. Yet that did not keep them from hacking away!!!

It's hard to find any positives with this effort. Burres was about as miserable as I expected him to be. For the life of me I can't understand why he felt the need to get behind on every batter he faced thus leading to situations where he had to throw strikes and when he did he got pelted.

Hanrahan didn't look bad. I guess that's about it.

And the batting in the top of the 8th continues its torrid pace ... called strike 3 on Jones on a thigh-high fastball, lazy fly to RF by Doumit, and an easy roller to 2nd by Clement, who looked at a fastball on the outside half of the plate and mid-thigh that was strike 2, only to reach waaaaay off the plate to make contact with a slider 6" off the outside corner to hit the easy roller to second.

Hey, here's an idea - hit fastballs that are thigh-high and lay off breaking pitches below the knees and outside.

Another in the endless line of ass-kickings. 9-3 blistering that was not as close as the score indicated.

The Pirates are not a good team. Really limited hitting, poor defense, and dreadful starting pitching are not a good combination.

I agree, they look bad. But then we expected it, right?

Two guys that to me do not look good in the field are Aki and Lastings. Lastings is trying hard and being a good soldier, but I just don't see the talent that others do. Aki just doesn't have the speed or athleticism to be good.

They will look bad for a few games, and look great for others. It is the way of young and incomplete teams.

It would help significantly if they could start getting contribution from LaRoche. Something, anything. I expect Doumit to be his streaky self.

I expect up and down from the staff with the exception of Duke and Maholm, who will give you what you see.

He hit the two hardest balls by the Pirates last night. His two hits were ripped, one for double and the other a single.

I didn't see those 2 hits, but I was referring to his defense. Apparently he has a bad ankle so I'm sure that's part of it. But let's face it, he's getting kind of old and kind of heavy to be a starting 2nd baseman.

He is a bit thick around the middle to be playing 2nd base.

I commented on that Opening Day in the Pub. I had never seen Aki before (don't watch much AL), and I was stunned to see a 2B with his... physical credentials?
