I thought the strike three on LaRoche was inside. That being said, I had little faith he would have gotten a hit anyway.

At least Crosby is 2-2 along with his 2 errors.

This was probably discussed in the offseason when I was tuned out, but can someone please explain why we're paying Bobby Crosby $5 mil to be the backup SS? It's not like he's going to be an instrumental part of the next contending team, he's 30 years old, and he's just as bad as Jack offensively. That signing feels like Matt Morris Lite.

Would you prefer Bixler?

$5 million? The contract is $1M with about 500K in incentives.

Got my info from ESPN at the following link (it says 2009 salaries, but this is obviously the 2010 team):

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=pit

Please tell me that the folks at ESPN just got this wrong.

They did. I think those are the terms of last year's contract with Oakland. See here:

The good news is, Hayden Penn's ERA is only 81.00.

Nice knowing you, Hayden Penn.

Hayden Penn = batting practice pitcher.

Classic case of a guy who can throw hard but has no idea how to pitch.

Concerns:

1.) I know it's only been three games, but I'm not convinced Aki leading off batting 1st is a good move.

2.) Crosby's throws to 1B? Not strong?

3.) Hayden Penn-throwing for strikes? :?

4.) LaRoche (at the plate)

5.) Clement (playing 1B has been better than his hitting so far)

To be fair, his second error came after making a tough diving stop. Not that I disagree overall though, it definitely wasn't an encouraging debut.

LaRoche is great with the glove so far, but anemic at the plate.

Penn sucks.

Aki isn't hitting yet, but quality at bats and draws walks.

Penn will probably be given a few more games...They said they are sending McCutchen down after his start because a 5th starter wont be needed for a while and Hanrahan would be taking his place on the 25 man...

but I imagine Penn might be gone when McCutchen is needed if he doesnt improve quickly...

Just a crap game by the Pirates so far. The stupid shift led to Furcal's (Erkel's?) "double," which was nothing more than a fly ball to left...

OK then, after 3 games (almost), left field shift - 2, Bucfan's old school - 1.

Wrong. The Dodgers' third run yesterday can be attributed to the shift. Kemp singles into left, 40' off the line. That single becomes a double because the LF'er has to cover an acre to get to the damn single, so Kemp reaches second, where he scores - with two outs - on the Ethier single.

Last two games - Reasonable Positioning 2, Shift 0.
