Coonelly is on right now. Man Cook is ten times worse on the radio then in the paper and that's saying something.

If you want some nostalgia, FSN has SportsBeat Rewind: Jim Leyland on right now.

I saw that...I just dont think that is a fitting way to kick off the season before the opening day pregame show...

I'll go on record stating that:
(1) I don't like Iwamura leading off - not enough contact for me at that position and potentially slows up AMac. If AMac is on base and pitchers are worried about steals, Iwamura should see better pitches. I'd move AMac to lead off.
(2) I'm not sold on the pitcher hitting 8th. However, I'm not up in arms about it and don't believe that it will likely be any significant difference maker one way or the other. That being written, I'd rather see Cedeno hitting behind LaRoche as Cedeno offers - minimally - some hitting protection for LaRoche. With the pitcher hitting behind LaRoche, I expect Andy to see a diminished number of hittable pitches.
(3) This team has to cut down its Ks. Games against Philly are a perfect example. In Game #1, Jones got fisted (I think with 2 strikes), but made contact and looped one into CF for a single and drove in a run. Not solid contact but . . . can't make things happen if you don't make any contact. In Game #2, same story with Milledge. Definitely with 2 strikes. Made poor contact but was able to sneak it into the OF for a hit and RBI. Not enough power on this team to load up and win on the basis of 3 run HR after 3 run HR. Ks will be the death of this offense. Making contact will give them a fighting chance.

As for today:
If Duke can give up one run or less in first 3 innings, the Bucs will win. If Duke gives up early runs, I envision the younger players tightening up due to Opening Day jitters and we will be looking at a long day from the Bucs' offense.
Would love nothing more than the top of the lineup setting a tone in the first inning and manufacturing a run or two - to be followed by Duke closing the door in the following innnig.

Prediction (heart):
Bucs 5 Dodgers 3
Prediction (head)
Dodgers 6 Bucs 1

Jones on pace for approximately 550 HRs this year. I'm pretty sure that would be a record.

Hey all, looking forward to another season of baseball. Things look like they are off to a solid start, knock on wood. Let's go Buccos.

Hahaha...I recall in an argument with someone last year, I said that Jones was a career minor leaguer. Anyone looking to impugn my credibility in future arguments, there ya go.

(Another knock on wood for the huge jinx I just put on Jones)

I recall a few people were saying that since Jones obviously doesn't have the makings of an impact player, the best we could hope for is that he gets off to a great start so we can fool somebody into giving us a haul for him. If that's the case, maybe we should pull the trigger and move him after the game.

Donelly got out of a big jam in the top of the 8th. Did he just strike out the side?

The pitching (especially bullpen) was less than stellar, but at least many of the outs were Ks which we are not used to seeing. Dotel did a nice job retiring the side in the 9th, especially after getting behind Manny 3-0 before getting him to pop up.

I doubt we'll see many 3-HR games by the Pirates this year but for today it was fun. Jones and McCutchen did what we expected them too after last year. Doumit's health is of course a key factor as always. Church's clutch pinch-hit double was something we have the capability of seeing often this year, let's hope that trend will continue.

I only got to see a very short part of the game (which did at least include Doumit's home run) but definitely seems like a promising start, at least for Duke and the offense. At what point are we allowed to accept that Garrett Jones isn't a one season wonder :-) In the meantime I'll take Jones tied with Pujols for the league lead...

I saw some very positive descriptions of Dotel's first outing but where LA not just giving up by then?

Aside from the obvious things to like/love...I feel a bit better about Cedeno at short and really like Clement. Didn't get to see any double play attempts so we'll see how they do there. This was a game we would lose 5-4 last year. How great is it to have Delwyn Young and Ryan Church to pinch hit and spot start?! Great game! The Pirates made the most of their opportunities today.

This might be worth it just to witness the yinzer uproar. Can you imagine?
