So what does Duke do after his team fights back, scores five runs in the top of the 4th inning and ties the game? Duke comes right back and serves up a gopher ball to the leadoff hitter. Tigers 6 Pirates 5. :x

Yeah, but he's batting .750 this spring.

Yep, ST means nothing. Duke gives up another run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Tigers 7 Bucs 5. Duke exits the game.

Yep, he is ready for Opening Day against the Dodgers.

Duke's ERA remains at 0.00 for the 2010 season. BD - his prior spring start, Duke was dominant, giving up 2 hits and 1 walk in 6 2/3 innings. He was poor today. Way too many well-struck balls.

And you know what those starts have in common? Neither one matters a damn right now.

Repeat after me ... spring performance means nothing, if the player finishes healthy and ready to start the season. I will not repeat the information previously provided about "great" spring performances by Pirates players in years past, other than to repeat, once again, that two of the greatest spring trainings ever by Pirates players were Mark Johnson in 1997 and Ronnie Paulino in 2007. Both went on to have terrible years ... just terrible.

And one of the worst spring exhibitions I remember noting was Xavier Nady's in 2008, where he hit a robust .139. So what does he do opening day, when the games counted?

He went 4-7, with a double, 2 HR's and 4 RBI's. That was more home runs, more XBH, and more RBI's in the first game than he registered THE ENTIRE SPRING.

I understand Bucfan.

However, answer me this: Why did Duke give up 8 runs (7 of them earned runs) today in less than 4 complete innings against the Tigers? Was his stuff really that bad and are the Tigers just a better team than Duke can handle? Or, was Duke just throwing crap up there not really trying at all just chalking it up to experimenting with his stuff? Did he figure it's just ST and he really wasn't trying?

Well, for the veterans in particular, I'm sure they could care less about spring training results. And, for a pitcher like Duke, a small decrease in intensity can make a big difference. Duke is a competitor but you can't tell me he's throwing with the same focus and intensity as he would be in a regular season game. He's just getting his work in.

This was Duke's last spring appearance, just throw the ball a little bit, go through the motions and make sure you're prepared for the Opener...

There are two positives from today's game...

Clement made a nice play on a badly thrown ball...

Quote:
The first throw, this one by Crosby on Ordonez's grounder, sailed to the dugout side of first base and caused first baseman-in-training Clement to come off the bag, catch the throw and tag out an arriving Ordonez

and Don Kelly made the Tigers 25 man roster...

Quote:
2:32: Tigers roster update:Mt. Lebanon's Kelly was told before the game that he'd made the roster, and it was announced to Detroit media. Nice job, Donnie. Now if your brother-in-law Neil Walker is trying to follow that same route to the bigs, as a utility guy. . .

Calling 7 of those runs "earned" is a stretch, because the "double" that drove in 3 of them was a fly ball where McCutch and Jones stared at each other. A couple more were Clement error at 1b.

Listening to the announcers, it was also Duke working on using his curveball in virtually every situation.

Did Jeff Larish make the 25 man roster for Detroit?

This just in ...

In his final spring start, Adam Wainwright goes 5, gets rocked for 10 hits and 5 runs.

In his final spring start, Roy Hallday goes 3, gives up 5 hits, 4 runs. He is humbled by Brett Cecil, who goes 6 quality innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs.

So should Cards fans be concerned about Wainwright and Phillies fans about Halladay based on these spring starts? If not, then why not, if Pirates fans should base conclusions on spring results?

Upon further review, Larish was a non roster invitee this spring.
