It'll be interesting to see how our opening day line up handles a top starter like Verlander.

FWIW, Cedeno was a late scratch again. Crosby is playing SS and batting 9th.

By reading the box score it looks like using the pitcher in the 8th spot backfired today. Duke was batting with two outs and two on and made the final out of the 2nd inning.

Sounds like it was some shoddy defense that did Duke in. Here is Finder's rundown of the inning:

Quote:
1:40: Duke gives up a run of singles, and a fly ball that falls between a crossed-up Jones and McCutchen in right-center allows the host club to strike first. 2-0, Tigers. Duke looked like he was about to escape a one-out, first-and-third jam with a flyout to left and a groudball to the hole where Crosby made a nice backhanded stab and soft throw to first. But Clement dropped the backhand stab at catching that throw, and Ryan Raburn was safe at first with another run scoring. Damon hit a ball that Jones jumped and missed backhand running to the track, and Ramon Santiago and Raburn scored to make it 5-0 Tigers. Ordonez ends the inning with a flyout to shallow center. End of two innings.

Pirate bats are waking up including Duke. He just hit a long double scoring LaRoche from third after he hit a long triple.

Go Bucs!!!

Aki just singled, bases loaded with the Tigers only one run ahead. They are getting to Verlander! Duke scores from third. Now the game is 5-4 Tigers. Two out with Crosby on 3rd and Aki on 1st.

Sounds like our lack of defense is killing us.

Doumit just singles in Crosby scoring Crosby from 3rd. Score tied 5-5.

So what does Duke do after his team fights back, scores five runs in the top of the 4th inning and ties the game? Duke comes right back and serves up a gopher ball to the leadoff hitter. Tigers 6 Pirates 5. :x

Yeah, but he's batting .750 this spring.

Yep, ST means nothing. Duke gives up another run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Tigers 7 Bucs 5. Duke exits the game.

Yep, he is ready for Opening Day against the Dodgers.

Duke's ERA remains at 0.00 for the 2010 season. BD - his prior spring start, Duke was dominant, giving up 2 hits and 1 walk in 6 2/3 innings. He was poor today. Way too many well-struck balls.

And you know what those starts have in common? Neither one matters a damn right now.

Repeat after me ... spring performance means nothing, if the player finishes healthy and ready to start the season. I will not repeat the information previously provided about "great" spring performances by Pirates players in years past, other than to repeat, once again, that two of the greatest spring trainings ever by Pirates players were Mark Johnson in 1997 and Ronnie Paulino in 2007. Both went on to have terrible years ... just terrible.

And one of the worst spring exhibitions I remember noting was Xavier Nady's in 2008, where he hit a robust .139. So what does he do opening day, when the games counted?

He went 4-7, with a double, 2 HR's and 4 RBI's. That was more home runs, more XBH, and more RBI's in the first game than he registered THE ENTIRE SPRING.

I understand Bucfan.

However, answer me this: Why did Duke give up 8 runs (7 of them earned runs) today in less than 4 complete innings against the Tigers? Was his stuff really that bad and are the Tigers just a better team than Duke can handle? Or, was Duke just throwing crap up there not really trying at all just chalking it up to experimenting with his stuff? Did he figure it's just ST and he really wasn't trying?

Well, for the veterans in particular, I'm sure they could care less about spring training results. And, for a pitcher like Duke, a small decrease in intensity can make a big difference. Duke is a competitor but you can't tell me he's throwing with the same focus and intensity as he would be in a regular season game. He's just getting his work in.
