OK, if we're not extremely competetive in today's game, I'll be officially pessimistic about the first couple months of the season. I really thought they would hit and pitch better than this.

1st inning: Aki singles, Cutch homers. I guess the problem was the lineup all along!

Not so bad today. I've moderated my diet recently, cut out some of the legumes, which I think has helped. Thanks for asking.

burgher ... post of the month.

The Pirates official web site indicates that the ambient, not man-made, wind is 20 mph, blowing out to RF. Jones goes yard, and his two-run bomb makes it 5-0 Buccos after 2.

It's now 10-0 Pirates. Cutch, Jones, Laroche and Aki have all gone yard. Clement is 2 for 2 with an RBI.

I announce Andy as my favorite, and he is so moved by the statement that he immediately leaves the building ...

Somewhere, Bob Smizik is gnashing his teeth and cursing the fates ... Clement is 3-3, and doubled in his second RBI of the game. He is now 12-45, with 4 2B's, 2 HR's, 8 RBI's and 6 walks. That works out to a slugging of .489 and an OBP of .353.

Of course, Smizik would then announce that spring stats are meaningless ... right after ripping the Pirates for their 6-16 spring record.

Well....it seems to me that ST for very good hitters should be when they are dialing in their swing and hitting the cover off the ball. I can see where ST for pitchers is more of a time for experimenting with different pitches......but there should be a time towards the end of ST for pitchers to get some solid starts in and some wins.
