Whoa, Mr. "Pitch to Contact" Zach Duke had 4 Ks in 3.2 innings! Also had 3 walks, though. Against Philly's A lineup. Must have had more movement to his pitches than he usually does.

Duke is battling control problems this spring. But remember the battle cry: IT IS JUST SPRING TRAINING.

That said, Duke is not going to walk guys and have success. Too many balls put in play against him, and some of those rollers will bleed into the outfield. If he puts guys on base with walks, he is going to give a lot more runs than if he makes the hitters put the ball in play and earn their way on base.

Dejan is making the umpire sound like Leslie Neilson from the 1st Naked Gun Movie

Quote:
2:10: Halladay is great and all, but he's getting one heck of a strike zone to work with, and it's starting to visibly tick off some of the Pirates. No one's going to do something dumb like arguing in a spring game, but Justin Vogel -- a Class AAA umpire -- is getting some really dirty looks. Halladay ends his fourth by getting Milledge to swing through strike three, but only after an absurd called strike made the count 0-2.

Quote:
2:23: A trying inning for Meek, in the sense that his stuff seemed good, but you could see he allowed a balk call to get to him. First, he was arguing with Vogel, then raising his head in disgust after not getting another call, then Wilson Valdez doubled for one run, and Howard singled for another. Still just two outs. Phillies, 3-1.

Quote:
2:34: Vogel quickly is becoming the star here. He just rung up Jeff Clement on a called third strike that would have made Eric Gregg blush, it was so far outside. Halladay is still pitching in the fifth. And he is still really good, with or without Vogel's help.

Quote:
2:38: Wow. Vogel just rings up Ramon Vazquez on another of those outside pitches, and Vazquez becomes the first to outright bark at him. No reaction that I can see from the dugout.

On the whole, I'm really not concerned about the starting pitching. If they haven't worked out any kinks 2 1/2 weeks from now, then I'll be mildly concerned. But now, as you say, they are just getting their work in.
