Just back in town from a four day trip. Can someone tell me -- Am I in some kind of time machine? Is that a Pirate team in 2009?

I heard of the changes but haven't actually seen with my own eyes the difference. It saddens me in many ways but I knew as I think all of us did that this was in the cards for over a year. It was a fire sale but they intentionally took 1 1/2 years to impliment so as to not totally destroy interest (and ticket sales) in the team for too long. So, they give up the last two months of this year. Starting with Nady, the look is completely different.

You could argue that this is a weaker team but when you consider the wealth of potential big players we have in the system now, it really is a big improvement. From pitching to hitting there is a great deal to look forward to. There is the question of defense without our two stud middle infielders but someone will probably grow into those too.

Doumit is the only veteren position player left. WOW. Wonder what he really thimks of all this??

Balester, the Nationals' Pitcher, has a better batting average going into the game today than Austin Kearns and Ronnie Belliard...

Well if they start showing a winning attitude, and have results, Doumit will be probably wondering why this shakeup took so long.

I'm really looking forward to today's game. I will have a little lunch, my laptop by my side, and relax. This will be my first look at the "new look" Pirates. Come on Paul, mow 'em down today!

7 solid innings from Maholm, giving up 1 run.

A HR by Jones.

2 hits for McCutchen and DYoung.

A scary 9th inning from Capps.

A Pirate win.

Ok.. enough Bob Walk. Cedeno should have actually went to third with that ground ball since his body was going that way. I agree with Young not being in the right position to take that throw.. but Willingham was still only 2 steps, if that off 3rd.. and would have gotten back very very easily. If Cedeno goes to third with that throw, a ground ball does not score a runner since that runner would have not been on third.

Is it me or is Maholm control gone in the toilet this season? I always thought of him as a good control guy, but walking the leadoff batter two straight innings (1 being the pitcher), raises a red flag.

I'm thinking its his knee...Maybe they'll shut him down in September and get it fixed and bring up Daniel McCutchen

Maholm loses control on occasion. He is not a pitcher who can succeed pitching to hitters on 2-0, 3-1 counts.

Further, he seems afraid on occasion to throw his best pitch - the curve. Not sure why he is so hesitant to throw that pitch.

I'm late to the board for this game. I'm excited to watch this team now.

It's interesting that this HR power has come about all of a sudden. I really want to take all 4 against the Nats so we can stick it to Burnett.

Too bad the chance of him getting to bat is almost zero...I'd love for Donnie Veal to work on his control issues against a lefty hitter...

Veal would probably miss, groove it and give up a homerun.
