Morton gone after 5 and 87 pitches. It seems to me that his hamstring might be acting up. Ugh

He was very careful with it, that is for sure. He was a bit slow in covering first.

Meanwhile, the Pirates are not hitting for shit. Their batting is awful right now.

Wow! Cutch clears the bases w/ a triple that just misses being a grand slam. 5-4 pirates.

Good job, Cutch. I was happy he did not get to two strikes ... the Colorado pitcher would have thrown ankle-high sliders. Instead, Cutch smokes an 0-1 pitch.

Morgan singles him in. Now, Steven Jackson time. (Gulp.)

And Steven Jackson says, "Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Bucfan." (Jackson helped out by the Laroche brothers, who make good plays on balls that were smoked.)

Smoked is right. If we trade this infield we should consider how strong this infield is defensively. That worries me and I'm sure it worries the pitching staff.

Amazing stat. Cutch has 4 triples in 16 games, Nyjer is tied for the league lead w/ 5.

That's unreal.

I am watching the dots here in my hotel in Albuquerque and can't say for sure but it would seem that Brandon Moss benefitted from several days of work with Don Long. Any comments from anyone actually seeing the game?

Moss has had a good night. He has hit the ball well and almost homered on the 1st hit. Nyjer has as well. I think that dramatically changes the offense overall.

He has hit three balls right on the screws. He doubled to left-center to drive in Andy Laroche, then crushed a single to RF. The last "double" was in fact a hard-hit one-hopper that ate up the Rockies second baseman, glanced off his glove into shallow center. Andy scored easily and Moss beat the throw to second for the kinda double.

It would be nice to get Morgan's bat going again, along with Moss.

(1) Pitchers need to throw inside.
(2) However, some pitchers are better than others at throwing on the inside corner.
(3) John Grabow is not particularly good at hitting the inside corner. He leaves the ball over the plate a ton.
(4) The only pitch that Chris Ianetta can really hurt you with is a fastball over the plate, inner part.
(5) Ianetta is not going to hit a HR against offspeed away.
(6) Grabow is ahead 1-2.
(7) Has two runners on, ahead 7-4.
(8) And decides it is a good time to try and spot a ball on the inner half of the plate.

Dumbest pitch selection in the history of the universe.

Chavez grooves one to Helton that is now in orbit over right field. Pirates lose 9-7. What a disappointment, up 7-4 in the 8th and lose by 2 with one out in the 9th.

Wow...that's bad.

That was ugly. Pirate pitchers are making mistakes when trying to get in on the hitters hands. Chavez had his fastball tail over the middle of the plate to Helton, just as Grabow did the prior inning with Ianetta. Both times, the catcher set up on the inside corner, the ball drifts right over the heart of the plate, and the ball is simply demolished.

Lefty throwing 2-seam to righty, and righty throwing 2-seam to lefty, on inner half is dangerous. Be sure to miss inside if missed. Just cannot have the ball start in the strike zone, inside corner, and then drift over the middle of the plate.

Its a joke, and it is why this team sucks. They battle back and that moron Grabow along with Chavez blows it. Unreal. JR Refuses to use Capps

Use Capps for WHAT? No manager in baseball would have used Capps in the 8th or 9th in that situation. NONE! And I am sure if he had used Capps and this would have happed, the Russell bashers would have griped about using his closer wrong.

The blame here goes solely on Grabow and Chavaz....

and on the baserunning blunders and bad bunt in the 8th.

Oh, none of that matters. Only need to keep saying the same thing, over and over.

From an entertainment standpoint, it was probably the best game I've been to since the Rockies/Padres Wilcard Tiebreaker tilt in October 2007. McCutchen's great catch, plus some good defense by the Rockies in the 8th. I really can't complain that "Mr. Rockie" Todd Helton won it on a walk-off blast. It's been awhile since I've seen such an ending, live, and I know I haven't seen Helton do it.

Ian Stewart missed the cycle by a single; we were hoping it would go extra innings for that reason alone.

In addition to the bum performances by Grabow and Chavez, we were a little befuddled by Burnett. He looked wild and his pitches seemed to be all over the place in his warm-ups. I though Morton did a good job for his first official start of the year.

To top it off, the autograph opps were great, tonight. Got Andy LaRoche, Matt Capps, McCutchen, Nyjer Morgan, Ross Ohlendorf and Freddy Sanchez. In a scheduling fluke, the Pirates are making a second trip to Denver in August. Of course, by that time, I could be looking at a whole new roster of Buccos and I'll have to start over with my autographed team ball.

Well another heartbreaker and another game we should have won. We had 4 chances to win this game and blew all of them.
Pirates fall to 31-36.
Rockies go up to 35-33.
The Rockies have now won i think 13 out of their last 14, I bet they wish they could play us every day.
