I thought he was pitching our starters' arms off?

75 pitches is hardly pitching his arms off. Especially with only a 2-0 lead.

Well sure, but 100 isn't pitching somebody's arm off either, yet you said yesterday he was pitching arms off. Wouldn't a 75 pitch outing seem prudent, since 85-100 pitches is deemed overuse? He should be applauded in that instance. Seems like the acceptable pitch count is entirely arbitrary and contingent on what Hurdle decides to do.

No putting more pressure on the pitchers because of lack of offense is what I meant. How many guys do we have on the dl? Rest my cast.

This situation did not warrant taking Locke out. He was cruising.

Normally it'd be easy to ask WTF? concerning lifting Locke, or any pitcher, so soon.

Considering the Pirates are/were holding a slim lead, have the 'Shark Tank' and that Locke has yet to pitch too deep into games (only the third time this year he went 7) it's a perfectly acceptable move.

Right but they have nothing to do with pitch counts, nor are any of them overworked. It's purely an instance of "Blame Hurdle". He's not perfect, I really don't even think he's all that good (but really, he's a manager so who cares) but some of the BS that gets thrown out is just absurd.

Would've liked to have seen Locke finish that gem. It would've been even more of a confidence booster.

Where did all this pitching the arms off stuff even come from? Burnett's injury is lower body, Rodriguez had missed starts prior to the elbow, Gomez just got tired as he wasn't conditioned to start from the onslot anyways and the bullpen hasn't worked near as hard lately, excluding Zagurski.

Great game by the bucs tonight.

A guy could get used to winning the first game of a series.

A job well done tonight by ye olde Buccos. It's nice to snag a win, considering it's Kershaw vs. 'Gumption' tomorrow.

Locke was outstanding. Night and day from the Cubs game. And cutch was cutch. Timely hits and manufactured a run purely with his speed. Nice to see him come around.

The Pirates have now shut out teams 11 times, league-leading of course.

Alvarez on pace to double his non-HR XBHs he had a couple of games ago in a couple of days.

Considering the recent SP news of Burnett going to the DL and an average prospect having to make a spot start, Locke coming up big against a decent team (despite the record) following his no-control game at Wrigley was essential.

Sorry Cleveland. I LOL'd.

Melancon and Grilli needed some work IMHO. Fine move. Not great, not awful Just fine.

But then if Locke had gone longer and given up a run you would have been all "OMG WTF is Hurdle doing. It was clear that he was screwing up before that hit. Get that schmuck outta the game!"

Enjoy the ride man. It's only a game after all.

It's funny how you were complaining the other day about Hurdle leaving starters in too long...And besides it's not like Melancon and Grilli are long relief guys or middle relievers. They are the setup guy and closer.

And with the way the Pirates pitching staff has their 'arms falling off' maybe a nice 7 inning, 75 pitch night will keep Locke sharp for his next start.

His two starts prior he threw 103 pitches and 100 pitches. Maybe he isn't the type of guy who can be effective throwing 100 pitches multiple starts in a row.

Couldn't agree more.

Also . . . can't help but feel that the Dodgers are going to wake up at some point. With Greinke, Ryu and Kershaw, they certainly have the pitching to go on a roll. Even with Kemp out, they have Puig, Gonzalez and Ramirez. That is a very good 3/8 of a lineup every day.

I will be happy when Sunday is over and the Bucs have no more games with L.A.

With the Bucs starting a guy who began the season in AA against arguably the best starting LHer in the NL, a win today would be monumental.
