So .... Hurdle batting Mercer in the 5 hole .... ahead of Alvarez .... might that be an indication of an evolution of what the managerial staff thinks of his potential offensive contribution?

He's just thinking ahead when in the 6th or 7th inning if he needs to make a double switch that Mercer is in a perfect spot to be pulled for the pitcher...

Jordy Mercer has 5 extra base hits in 28 at-bats. Pedro has 6 extra-base hits in 114 at-bats.

And of course, Clint Barmes has 3 XBH in 92 at-bats - or the same number that Mercer has hit in just HR's in more than 3 times the at-bats.

So, while BD has departed these shores and is not here to remind us how marginal Mercer's upside is, (and he's probably 100% correct), I am firmly behind Mercer and hereby announce that I am the VP of the Free Jordy Mercer Club (JCSteele gets to be titular President since he brought it up). There just seems to be no reason to keep McDonald at the very least, and for Barmes to get the number of at bats he's been getting.

Hope they don't let Harvey get settled in or it'll be a long afternoon of swings and misses.

Concur.

Barmes has defensive value. Mercer's offensive value appears to outweigh Barmes' defensive value.

Further, there is simply no reason to keep McDonald over Mercer. Old McDonald can plays SS and 2B. So can Mercer. Old McDonald can handle those positions defensively. So can Mercer. Old McDonald cannot hit a lick, does not walk, has no power, and cannot run. Mercer can, and does, and has, and can.

It's a rout. Keep Mercer, play him at 2B and SS with some regularity. See how he does at SS. Determine if the team has a SS for the next five years or not. Even if Mercer is not a long-term solution, he is an upgrade over Old McDonald and Barmes and should play to make the 2013 Pirates a better team.

This seems analogous to the 1987 Pirates and a SS named Al Pedrique. Only older Pirates fans will remember who he is. He was obtained from the Mets and was a huge upgrade at SS over Rafael Belliard, a defensive specialist who just could not hit.

The 1987 Pirates installed Pedrique as the starter and he hit. The team improved. The Pirates also learned that Pedrique was not good enough to be a full-time SS, even if he made the 1987 team better and was an upgrade over Belliard, so the Buccos traded for Jay Bell.

Same scenario here. Play Mercer. See what the hell he has to offer, since he is an upgrade over the offensive black hole known as Clint Barmes. Find out of Mercer is in fact good enough to be a starting SS for the Pirates. If not, make an informed decision.

But the bull---- of having Mercer rake in AAA while Barmes and Old McDonald stink like week-old fish for the major league team just makes no freaking sense.

Marte, McCutchen, Jones, Alvarez and Snider like the fastball. That is why we have seen such a large percentage of pitches being breaking balls against them so far.

Harvey has a nasty fastball. Spots that pitch where he wants at 96 mph. I am interested to see how the Buccos do this game.

Mercer will be great trade bait if he continues to perform. That's the gist I'm getting from management. They're more worried about him getting playing time at the minors league level and continuing to develop than watching him rot on the bench.

I've never seen a player so overvalued in Barmes. He should at least be released or traded at the deadline to make room. Send Mercer down, go ahead but let him play short everyday so he's ready in July. No more excuses for weak spots on a club that "could" contend.

If Mercer is not in the plans at short don't ruin the guys career. Let him move on. I think he's proven he's more than organizational depth.

Hurdle made it sound like Mercer is headed back to AAA. Said better for him to play every day. I concur...he should play in place of your boy Barmes, Clint. :x

Gomez is getting hit hard. He must be applying four-leaf clover to the ball.

How many times this year has Pedro been on deck with the bases juiced or w/ multiple RISP, only to see the batter in front of him knock in the runners or end the inning?

Another good outing by Jeanmar. He could have gone one more, at least.

Is it too early to put the trade for him in the 'Win' column for NH? It's looking like it's close to what we'd hoped the Clint Robinson trade would be.

I agree with blass he took gomez out too fast. Russell is a way better catcher than mckenry defensively. Mckenry never throws anybody out.

Way to blow bullpen, giving up the lead.

It's one thing the bullpen blowing a lead. It happens. But when it is because of a walk and wild pitch, UGH!

We have the 8th and 9th inning solutions. It seems the 7th is an issue and it has been a different villain every time.

Good news is we got Harvey out of the game.

Surprised that it was Wilson and not Mazzaro.
