Another error on Pedro. Another strikeout as well.

In all the years I've watched the Pirates, I've never been more frustrated with a pitcher than JMac. I wish I'd have never seen what he was (once) capable of. The Pirates have already put up 4 runs tonight and will likely end up with 6 or 7 and it won't be enough. %$#@!

People need to calm down with the "OUR PITCHING STAFF IS DOOMED!" cries. It was the same types of response with the offense when they started 1-5 and weren't hitting. For the most part the pitching staff has been very good thus far, and that's with working with two injuries of guys who are expected to be back next month and one who is expected to be back for his next start. Even J. Sanchez delivered a very good start his first time around. No need to panic. There are improvements on the way and the placeholders have done fine in the meantime thus far.

I personally never said doomed, but they are going to need some help. I assume Wandy will be fine health wise, but it was still a missed start. There is nothing you have seen this year thus far that can possibly give you faith in JMac. And sure Sanchez had a decent start, but then an awful one. His recent history should give no cause for optimism. Thus they will need help soon from Liriano and Karstens. Hopefully we then get a boost from Cole. Nobody is saying doomed, but no one should be overly confident either.

Right now jmac is not a major league pitcher.

Why is Russell Martin playing 3rd base now? I just turned the game on and saw he was there instead of Pedro

It is a struggle to find any positive contribution from Alvarez at the plate this year. 8% of the season and no production.

His defense is shoddy too.

His first start: 7IP, 2H, 1ER.

He settled in fine after a bad first inning in his second start as well.

So no, the words you put in my mouth are not true at all.

Tim Williams of PiratesProspects explained it earlier today, I posted it in the Presley promotion thread earlier ...

Quote:
Hurdle added that the team still has a “trick card” it has yet to play this season.

“Russell Martin can go to third base and play tonight if we need him,” he said. “He’s played in the big leagues at third base. I watched him play a handful of games and we’ve talked about this. We didn’t want to have him out there because as soon as he went to short that got a lot of press. He’s backing off taking balls in the infield, but third base — he knows that he’s capable and we know that he’s capable if I need an in-game adjustment there I can go with him there and (Michael) McKenry behind the plate.”

Pedro might not net Bobby Hill at this point.

Last year people got so pissed off at me for dissing on Pedro. I even had people threatening me. But the guy sucks! I really think he needs to hone his skills in AAA for awhile.

And I think jmac is hitting bedard territory. This is more than just a slump.vyou can't let a team score ten runs in the first two innings. And hurdle can't let it happen either. 6 runs can win you a lot of ball games.

Hone what skills?

Beating up on AAA pitchers isn't going to solve anything.

ML Pitchers are not afraid of him. They know he can't hit offspeed and isn't aggressive at the plate (among other deficiencies).

At this point and on a good day Pedro is Rob Deer/Dave Kingman.

It's no secret to anyone.

But enough hitting the Toro pinata.

This was a frustrating loss, but the 'positive' to consider is that ONE bad inning really did the Bucs in.

The Pen was solid as usual (Wilson HR allowed and Morris BB #'s included) and the offense did manage to score six runs (four off of a decent pitcher in Lynn) while collecting twice as many hits.

Walker continues to find his groove, Snider might be starting something as well, Fort's proving his worth, and Marte is beautiful.

And how about Jose Tabata's two hits?

For 'one of the 54' losses and after such a horrid start, there were enough positives to take away going forward while forgetting the blunders in this one to move on and fight another day.

Besides, we'll have plenty to complain about tomorrow when Sanchez lays another egg! :D

You're a good guy, NSM. Always really enjoyed your posts here.

Also, about McDonald ... his mechanics seemed so off tonight that I had wondered if it might be a health issue. The drop in velocity on his fastball is obviously noticeable, and he has even been throwing his slider this year? And apparently Biertempfel reported that he inquired about his health post-game and J-Mac responded that he's only looking for in-game questions.

Good news, Liriano had a nice rehab start in Bradenton tonight and looks to be right in track with his early May ETA.
