Why is it we have to be down 3 runs before we get our bats going?

Did I mention that I think Hughes sucks.

Well don't let your ignorance get in the way of the facts. For his career, Hughes has a 3.15 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Both numbers are well above average.

I don't care what his ERA is, every time I watch him he struts in there and screams and yells and intimidates and scowls and gives up a run. That's anecdotal but I don't care.

It's certainly possible that, by coincidence, he gives up runs only when you are watching.

I like the guy. I like the way he pounds the bottom edges of the strike zone so consistently. But he does tend to get hit hard when he gets into the meat of the strike zone.

I'm with you. Hughes has been very, very solid.

I'm aware that it's probably anecdotal. Maybe he doesn't like when I watch him pitch on TV.

It's the 3rd game of the season. Sheesh.

Lets talk when it's the 30th game.

I agree completely, but by the 30th game (well, 34 actually) we'll have played at Dodgers and Arizona, home vs Cincy, St Louis and Atlanta, played at Philly and St Louis again, with only a break vs Houston before we play Washington and Seattle. That's about as tough an opening to a season as there can be. If we're really a 78 to 80 win team, we can certainly compete, but let's just say I'm pessimistic.

For all ye pessimists, some scary facts/stats after three games:

1/2 of their runs, 1/4 of their walks and nearly 1/3 of all the Pirates hits have come off of Carlos Marmol...

I'd be more scared by this if I was a Cubs fan.

And a more positive fact/stat for all ye olde optimists:

Cutch stole in back-to-back games only TWICE all of last year. He DID NOT steal a base in three straight games. The closest he came in 2012 to three or more steals in three games was from 10-14 JUN when he had three steals in four games.

The last time he had steals in three (or more) straight games was from 30 SEP-4 OCT 2009.

He should have been out by a good margin on his steal of second.

Oh, absolutely.

Still, it's an [albeit early] encouraging sign for those who wanted Hurdle and co. to utilize the speed of Cutch/Marte/Tabata/etc. on the base paths.

Seems to me that the key is for you to hurry up and change the channel every time you see him coming out of the bullpen. That way he'll always pitch well :D

Or, if a jinx isn't involved, then at least you won't have to see what happens next.
