I'm fascinated by baseball uniforms and do a lot of reading on them. I also kind of collect jerseys (really only Pirates jerseys, though). I've been thinking a little about this lately and wanted to see what everybody else thought too.

Use this thread to post what you think are the best or worst baseball uniforms. They can be current, old, alternates, throwbacks, classics, etc.

This will probably sound a little homerish but I think that one of the best home uniforms of all time is the sleeveless vest we wore in the 1960s.

One of the things I like about this is that it is a classic look. I tend to like the white for home and gray for the away jersey scheme. I'm a much bigger fan of the white jersey, though. Maybe that's because it's the color you see your team play in when they're in the home park.

Another thing I like about this jersey is the trim around the neckline. Our vests that we have worn recently did not have the trim around the neck and I think that the trim there really adds something.

Here is Clemente modeling the version with the numbers on the front and trim on the neck:

Image

And here is our old friend Jack Wilson modeling the new style vests we began wearing in 2001 with the opening of PNC park:

Another point that I like is a team who does not put the names on the back of the jersey. I love this both from a team standpoint (because baseball is a team game...honor those who come before you, etc.) and a consumer standpoint (players change all the time and you don't want to be left with that Jason Bay jersey).

With that said, I think you can't go wrong with the Yankees pinstripe jersey they wear at home. I'm not a fan of their road jersey, for some reason. Here's a picture even though I know you all know this one:

Other than the obvious (the Pirates uniforms), I tend to like the classics. You can't go wrong with the Dodgers and Yankees. I also like the Royals powder blues.

I used to really like the Padres when they were the simple brown and yellow. I don't like their modern look. I don't like the D-backs uniforms either.

I always love the throwback games. I think uniforms were much better in yesteryear.

I typically hate the dark top over white pants. The D-backs and Cubs do this way too often.

Those Astros throwbacks always wind up on lists of the worst uniforms of all time. I think they have a kind of cool feel to them though. What's really strange is that although they end up on the list of worst uniforms of all times, they are very popular as a throwback. I guess watching ONE game in them isn't so bad but I can see how there would be some distaste in watching every game in them.

Another team whose uniforms I really love are the White Sox. I like the black and white color scheme more than the dark blue and white that the Yankees wear. I also love their logo so here is the Big Hurt modeling:

Speaking of the White Sox, here are two that are on my all-time worst list:

And, the "shorts" incident (WTF):

This White Sox uniform has to be the worst of all time.

I like the '60s Bucco vests, but not their recent reincarnation. They had to make them too wide to fit the player names, and that ruined the look.

Yankee pinstripes are the closest thing baseball has to a tux, and Detroit's home duds are a close second.

The Tigers do have a great uniform as well. Again, I like the White Sox uniform better because of the black and white rather than blue and white. The Tigers uniform is interesting because without the piping it would be almost exactly the same as the Yankees uniform just without the pinstripes.

Chalk this style up on my worst of all time list. I don't know why they thought this would be a good idea, but I think these are probably the most hideous uniforms to ever grace a baseball field at just about any level:

I know that I will probably catch some flack for this but I think that the pill box hats that went with the uniform you pictured and the hat I have pictured below are the ugliest hats of all time.

Another disaster in my mind is cream uniforms. I absolutely hate the way these look. The Padres have had a ton of uniform flops including camouflage, however, the cream is pretty awful in and of itself:

The Giants uniform is a better color because the fact that it's cream is less noticeable:

I don't mind the cream associated with the Giants. I agree with the Padres though...very tacky.

Pirates vest unis in the 60's were the light cream colored. I liked them best.

I actually think that currently we have some of the nicest uniforms as well. Although I like the vests I am pretty happy with what we have now with the sleeves. I also appreciate the black alternate which I was pretty skeptical about before last season.

I also couldn't resist posting this picture of McCutchen:

Or this one :)...in fact it seems like McCutchen would look good in any uniform we put on:
