Well folks, it looks like I am about to be the latest member of the board to follow the beloved Pirates (and Penguins) from afar. I have accepted a job that will require me to move from Pittsburgh to the sunny central coast of California. It was a hard decision to leave the area, family, friends, sports teams, and medical school, but I've made the career decision that I don't want to be a doc and treat patients (and I really really really wouldn't want to do it under Obamacare), and so, with my PhD in hand, I am taking over as a director of research and development for a diagnostics company, a position that will allow me to do exactly what I have envisioned doing, including being involved with clinical trials along with basic research. We will be between LA and SF, so hopefully I'll still be able to see the Bucs and Pens play in person a few times each year. I'll be moving some time in November, I believe.

BTW, if anyone is in the market for a 3br house in the Greenfield area... ;)

Congratulations! I guess you'll have to get used to the Pirates starting at 4:00 in the afternoon!

Thanks all. AZ, its about 2 hrs north of LA from what I've been told (I've never made the drive...), about 15 miles from the coast. And IA, I figure if I get home from work at 4:30, well, the games should be just about over by then, right??

Dont like when someone leaves the area but I did it myself and 9 years later came back. Every place has its good/bad points. The cost of living/housing is very high. Make the best of your situation

Congrats BBF... love the area out there, especially Palo Alto, expensive but tons of things to do.

You must be somewhere near Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo.

About half-way in between. The job is in Santa Maria. I figure we will rent for a year and then decide where to buy from there. The good news is that real estate values are not rebounding out there yet, and the realtors we've spoken with don't expect prices to start climbing for at least another year, maybe longer. Right now, the cost of living is pretty comparable to Pittsburgh in a lot of ways.

The PCH runs around Santa Maria to the west, highway 101 runs right through the middle of town.

Congrats BBF. Get ready for 4:00pm hockey games and 10:00am Stiller games.

Good luck although you won't need it. And it's not like you are leaving your "neighbors" here. :D

BBF, at some point you should consider finding time for a day trip down to Solvang (and take your camera along). IIRC, it's less than an hour's drive from where you'll be working. While there, treat yourselves to aebleskivers from one of the walk-up windows.

If you're still there at dinnertime, check out the Alisal golf resort and ranch.

I predict you won't be disappointed.

Congratulations-- sure must be hard to make such a decision but with your backround and interests it looks like the choice was easier. Best of luck-- keep posting!

Just saw this BBF. Congrats, Dude (just trying to get you into Cali-speak mode! :D ).

My brother does just that type of work for PSU at Hershey. He loves it and it seems a very satisfying career. Congrats again.

Send us some of the "fresh" wine will ya.

ZM
