Monday and Tuesday this week I filled in for 6th grade English. Now I'm in the High School for the Vocational Home Ec teacher for three days. Monday and Tuesday next I'm here again for 11th grade social studies (one of my areas of certification.)

This year I have worked already 119 days and missed only 14 days when students are in school. Some ask me why didn't I stay on as a full time teacher? Because I was fried with the everyday stuff teachers have to put up with. Now, I come in and enjoy the kids - most days- and go home without making out tests, grading, talking to moms, doing lesson plans, attending meetings, et. al.

My retirement 5 years ago, together with this money leaves me about where I was financially.Much easier and more fun.

Social Security starts for me this summer and that will give me more freedom. Life is just beginning to get easier. Want to travel more. Hope my health holds up.

Well, that probably bored you but maybe it gave some of you young guys an idea of what you might face in your later days.

My hats off to you. Subbing can be a tough job but I am glad you have found it to your liking. Just a year ago here there were days that we would have to cover other teachers classes on our prep time but now with the downturn in the economy, we are overloaded with available subs.
