2012 at No. 1 in Division II Poll
Pittsburg State, fresh off of their second Division II national championship in 2011, opens up 2012 as the preseason favorite to win the national championship. This is the first time since the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll started in 2000 that the Gorillas have begun the season ranked No. 1. Minnesota-Duluth comes in at No. 2 with five first place votes, followed by Northwest Missouri State, Midwestern State (Texas) and last year’s national runner-up, Wayne State (Mich.), rounding out the Top 5.

There will be three Top 25 matchups in the first week of the 2012 season, highlighted by No. 6 Colorado State-Pueblo playing host to No. 24 West Texas A&M.

The # 1 and # 3 schools play in the same conference, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Not sure if they meet during the regular season because the conference
keeps adding new schools.. up to fifteen members now.

When I was a kid there were only seven schools in the old MIAA (Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Association.) My school Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State),
Southeast Missouri State, Central Missouri State (now just Central Missouri), Northwest Missouri State, Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State) Missouri Rolla (now Missouri S & T)
and Lincoln. Three of those schools have moved up to Div. I (FCS.)

Pittsburg State and some of the newer members were NAIA schools back then. The old MIAA had good quality basketball and football. I miss those old days.
