I know he lost a step, but I still think the Steelers are making a mistake. If he would play for a low price, I'd rather have him there than a rookie. I hope he just retires. Much like Franco with that goofy bird on his helmet, it sickens me to think of Ward wearing another uniform.

As someone who's favorite Steeler for a decade has been Hines, its time to hang'em up. The quickness and foot speed are gone (even the hands faltered this year). The organization did everything in its power to get him 1000 and he did it. There can be no hard feelings here.

Next up, Smith, Farrior, Hampton, and Kemoautu.

Can't get open, can't hang on to the ball, and can no longer take a hit either. He is not worth a roster spot. It is time to retire. It is both sad and admirable that he doesn't realize it.

He will try to continue, but his chances of having another successful season are just about zero.

The Steelers say they want to bring Hampton back for another year.

He'll be missed, and I join those who don't like to think of him in any other NFL uniform. I'd have preferred to see a few more legitimate downfield catches rather than that cheap whatever-it-was that resulted in No. 1,000 for him even as it lost yardage in the Steelers' own backfield. But it's one more demonstration that pro football is first and foremost a business. The Steelers need cap room, and Ward wasn't going to wow any of us again.

At least we'll see him inducted into the Hall of Fame a few years from now.

That's fine, but not at $8.56 million coming off an ACL surgery. He has to restructure to stay.

With Wallace about to hit Restricted FA, they need to open up space to match an offer on him, plus they need cap space for the draft and or any free agency. Right now they are a bit below the cap with the Ward move

Look at all the easy money they can move if they choose too. The media hyped cap issues are pretty overblown.

Hampton $8.5 million
Kemoeatu $5.3 million
Farrior $3.8 million
Foote $3.6 million
Smith $3.0 million
J.Scott $2.7 million
McFadden $2.7 million

There are all kinds of funny rules about when you can cut a guy and how much cap savings you get.

McFadden was already released but I agree with your point.

There are some holes to fill but there are also quite a few good players on the roster.

This perfectly explains the Cap and OL woes... wow.

I agree with your assessmet and expect a few more vets to get the hook or restructure. It's the best thing for the team---especially restructuring. The Steelers have a 2 (maybe 3) year window left with this core. HAVE to try and capitalize on that.

Farrior's agent says he is going to be cut today!

I think Farrior might have one decent year left, but Kemo and Smith were too injury prone to justify their salaries.

I hope Hampton restructures.

I understand the NFL is a business, the Steelers are old, etc., but I think it's a tad of 'bad form' to clean house like this. Bad karma.

Such is life in the NFL...

No, this was necessary, and we will see another wave of it next year. Harrison, Hampton, and Batch, to name a few, are near the end of the line. Several others not far behind.

While I appreciate Chaz, Batch has been lucky to be a backup the last 5-7 years... So I completely agree there.

I'm less worried about Harrison's level of play and more about the controversy which surrounds him. Between his history of off-field issues and on-field 'headhunting' (not that I would call it that) I think it's rather obvious that the end of the line is near.

The thing I admire most about Hines was that he never asked for the ball. He went out and played hard and did whatever was needed to win. A dying breed in today's game.
