Give the Wings credit. I dont understand the logic....Hossa could have got more money with the Pens. Oh well

A one-year contract? I know he wanted to play for a winner but that is shocking. Detroit will be a heavy favorite but there are no guarantees.

How ironic would it be for the Pens and Wings to play for the Cup again and the Pens win and Hossa has egg on his face?

:)

If ESPN has it's facts straight, it's a one year deal worth $7.4 million. The Pens were offering the same dollars but with more years. Edmonton was throwing $9 million at him. So what does that imply?

Hossa wants to play for the team most likely to win the Cup next year

-and-

He wants to be eligible for FA after 2009

He gets his cake and he gets to eat it to. Good for him, I guess.

Well he is taking on more risk. That being said how risky is it to get 7.4 mil ?

Are NHL contracts guaranteed like MLB?

Assuming he stays healthy and puts up his typical numbers, he has a great shot to win a cup AND sign a long term contract for $10+ million after next season. That's a good gamble IMO.

Well, you have to get your cake before you eat it! :D

The translation to English from the French does that. The correct French construction (subject to FANCH's approval) is "you can eat your cake, and have it, too!" ... as attributed to a young, now headless French queen.

Regarding Hossa, I'm getting the feeling that he wants to grab the trophy (as you said) and then maybe head back home (Europe) to the new Russian Superleague, along with all the new Russion Supermoney.

He would indeed, eat his cake and have it, too.

If Hossa were truly selfish he could have signed an obscene contract with a lesser team. You really can't blame him for wanting to play with the best team. He "sacrificed" a year of his career in pursuit of the Cup. There's no way Detroit can re-sign him the following year though. They have to sign Zetterberg (sp?)

Another Slovak great did a similar thing. When his former team planned to trade Hasek, the great goaltender demanded that he be sent to the Red Wings.

I am happy that my Habs signed Georges Laraque. He returns home!

Yeah, f*ck Hossa for looking out for his own best interests. None of us would ever do that....

I agree that Hossa should look out for his own best interests. What I don't understand is how he considers a one-year deal (while declining a 5-year, $35 million deal) his own best interests. Certainly a surprise.

Why go longterm? He can go and do a one year deal and play the waiting game to see if another team in the NHL will pay higher for him next season or he can see how the new league with Jagr does and jump continents for more $$$...

He wants a ring badly, and he figures that playing for the Wings next year gives him the best chance of getting one. I can't say that I agree with his reasoning, but there it is.

Hosa F-ed up last year. First, he signed with the wrong team and he signed for much less than he could have. Maybe Montreal, L.A. or another team will pay him the big money(he is still a very productive player)Detroit is offering 4 mil a year which is a truckload but he'll likely get a multiyear offer of 6 mil or more.
