That was awesome. Donovan in extra time advances the Americans to the knockout round. What drama. Great job USA!

I actually saw the goal. It was quite a fluke, and I didn't realize I was watching live, or know anything about the context, but it was very exciting, kind of like watching a soccer game.

Yeah, I actually watched more soccer today than I have in my entire life. I caught the last 30 minutes of the match. I understand the excitement but the announcers also made it easy to explain why I don't enjoy soccer. Tied 0-0 and 30 minutes, let me repeat...30 minutes, left in the match the announcers were saying how the USA had to really scramble and it looked bleak as time was running out on their hopes to win the match. Dude...they had 30 minutes to score! It's not like it was the bottom of the 9th with two outs and your team was down six runs! It wasn't the fourth quarter and they were down by 21...the game was TIED!

I'll probably catch bits and pieces of their next match (if it is convenient) and I'll cheer for the 'ole red, white, and blue but I won't be heartbroken if they don't win another match.

Son is following the games very closely, and gets up at 6:30 PST to watch the USA team. He was seriously stoked about the outcome, and texted me with the news.

I am watching the games and rooting for the USA in large part because it is important to my son. If it matters to him, it matters to me.

And son is a Pirates fan ... right now, the Pirates are not worth watching. The soccer matches are very compelling for him. If the Pirates were a good team, then the World Cup would not be as important, but - well, the Pirates are horrible.

Again.
