Herb Pope is a basketball standout from Aliquippa, PA, just across the river from me. He has had his share of trouble, including getting shot 5 times (in one incident) and getting a DUI.

He had seemingly straightened out his life and is playing for Seton Hall. He is one of their best players.

Last night in an NIT game he punched the man guarding him in the nuts - twice. The first time the refs didn't see it, but the second time it was blatant and he was ejected from the game only 6 minutes into the contest. The other team immediately went on a run and Seton Hall was blown out.

Truly bizarre. What a fool.

Is what you mean... "He got his coach fired a couple days later"?

The coach was former Pitt super-recruiter Bobby Gonzalez.

The piece I read on the situation stated that he was not fired due to the won loss record.

Yep, that is what I've read.

What I was alluding to was that he brought in a lot of questionable character guys who were talented, like Pope and like Robert Mitchell - who was kicked out the door at Duquesne after a year in which he was the A10 rookie of the year. Subsequently, Mitchell got kicked off the SH team just before the NIT tourney game.

Gonzalez obviously lost his team.
