Last night I went to Cleveland's annual Irish music festival. This year I wore Pirates cap & T-shirt (Paul Maholm replica jersey.) No green for me.. I'm of Welsh descent. lol)

I received some comments as I often do. People assume I am a Steelers fan. While checking out one of the concerts an inebriated man approached me. "You know you're in Cleveland?"

"Ha ha!" I said.

"You like the Browns, right? You like the Browns."

I just nodded, hoping he'd leave. It was so loud there we couldn't talk, thank God. He patted me on the back. I imagined answering him with "f-- the Browns." I would have gotten my tail kicked.

Earlier in the evening the singer of another band spotted a man in a Steelers jersey. "Get that guy out of here!" he jested, half seriously.

I am wondering if the "rivalry" is even a rivalry anymore. Do any of you guys joke around with Cleveland fans when you encounter them? Cleveland people really despise Pittsburgh (and University of Michigan.) "Pitts-puke" is a regular phrase here.

I love rivalries. I think rivalries need to survive even through a bad stretch for one or both of the teams. Just because one team is the Super Bowl champ and the other is bad shouldn't take away from the hatred. Hate (in sports) is good and healthy.

The *real* Browns are in Baltimore. And yes, we still love kicking the sh!t out of anything Cleveland related.

Cleveland fans are filled with envy. Think about it. Only if you are 60 years or older would you have remembered a championship and even then you were just a little squirt. Nothing but losing and the few times the Clev teams were close to a championship, they choked. Add to it the fact that the closest city Pgh, has seen 6 SB wins 3 Stanley Cups and even the Pirates with 2 WS wins while they have nothing. Cle fans are like the angry ugly lonely girl at school who cant stand to see the popular girls/cheerleader types who have fun and friends.

Cle fans think there is a rivalry but Pgh fans dont see it that way. In football the rival right now is with the Ravens...maybe even the Pats. The Browns are just another divisional game.

I just don't get that or even understand that. A rivalry isn't something that comes just because two teams are good. That sounds like what I have to put up with here in Omaha. Nebraska fans have gone through so many phases of their so called "rivalries" that it has become a joke. In the early 90s they were "rivals" with Colorado. In the late 90s they were "rivals" with Kansas State. In the early 2000s they were "rivals" with Missouri. Now there is talk about being "rivals" with Kansas. Really? Those aren't rivalries.

Records shouldn't matter. What should matter is a hatred for the city/team/fans. I have friends that I can't stand to see or talk to the week of the Iowa State/Iowa game. The great thing is they can't stand to see me either.

Fans in Iowa really thought the ISU/Iowa rivalry was dead in the 80s and early 90s. Iowa won 16 (or 17, I can't remember) in a row over some of the absolute worst Iowa State teams you can imagine. A funny thing happened has happened since then...ISU has won 8 of last last 14 and it has really become fun. Every ISU fan considers this a rivalry and 95% of Iowa fans think it's a rivalry. The only Iowa fans that don't are the aged old man that still thinks it's 1985 and Iowa State is still an unbearable program. You almost feel bad for that guy. You don't want to be "that guy".

I'm telling you that there is more hate or envy from Cle fans towards Pgh than the other because in football the past 10 years has been lopsided in favor of Pgh.
During the 70s, the Browns were still a rival but the Raiders were hated just as much or more...but that faded away.
The Pirates in the 70s had rivalies with the Reds and then the Phillies...why because the competition was there.

I see the same thing here with Pitt vs Penn St. Pitt fans hate/despise Penn St while most Penn St fans dont view it the same way...because they are big time while Pitt is viewed as chump change.

The hatred fades a bit when the rival is weak and your team is strong, but the rivalry is very much alive.

"Big time" in their own minds eye and playing in an overrated conference. When will they replace one of their non-con gimme games with Pitt?

I love going to Cleveland dressed in a Steelers jersey and a terrible towl. Last year i was in town for a wrestling event after the Browns lost to the Cowboys in week 1 and we drove all around waiving terrible towl and chanting here we go Steelers and honking the horn. It just looked liked it bummed them out even more because the Steelers and Browns played on Sunday night the next week.
I did stop for directions because i could understand what my GPS was saying and they saw i was in a Steelers jersey so they tried to make me go the wrong way.

They purposely gave you the wrong directions.. nice. I admire your courage, Colin.. wearing a Steelers jersey here. I can not stomache Cleveland sports fans.

I agree with Argentum. The real Browns are in Baltimore. Why did the NFL allow the team logo and records to remain in Cleveland? They didn't force the Colts to change team name and colors when they left Baltimore. I realize that involved an overnight move but Art Modell's move was similarly done in secrecy.

I still remember the Browns' last home game in 1995. Cleveland fans booed every Browns player. I will never forget that. I was so angry. Cleveland did not deserve another team. My co-workers refused to talk about football for the next three years (until the Browns were "reactivated.")

I am holding onto the hope that Cleveland never wins a championship in my lifetime. I am praying Le Bron will leave after 2010. If he remains here Cleveland will eventually get the championship that has eluded them.

And back to the supposed rivalry.. when the Pens reached the Stanley Cup final Cleveland fans were heard murmuring "oh, no.. not another championship for Pittsburgh." But then, in the same breath they'd say "it's only hockey.. their baseball team sucks."

Anything to make them feel good right? Sad thing is they are right about the baseball team but I think their team blows too!

I actually am a big Cavs fan believe it or not. Being on the Pa line here it is about an hour to Pittsburgh and an hour and a half to Cleveland, so i do make it to my share of Cavs games a year. They are pretty fun to watch. The Pitt Panthers are fun to watch but that's college. Also i didn't jump on the Cavs bandwagon when they got Lebron, i have been a fan for about 15 years now.

estrago, yes.. the Indians are terrible this year. They really had a special thing going in the late ninties. They sold out every game for four straight years at (then) Jacobs Field. Then the new owner decided he didn't want to spend money. I would be so angry if I was a Tribe fan. Now they're talking about trading Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez. I can understand them wanting prospects for Lee, but Victor is well loved here. Horrible organization.

Colin.. so you've been with the Cavs since the Shawn Kemp days. lol I haven't been to a Cavaliers game in over twenty years. I go to Cleveland State games now and then, as well as Baldwin Wallace College. I just enjoy high school and college basketball a lot more.

If they are a horrible organization, what would you call the Pirate organization?

What? You don't like facing the Temple Owls at home every year? Ha! The Nittany Lions may go 12-0 this season but their schedule really is a joke.

As long as you have 108,000 fans willing to watch blowouts over Temple and Akron there will be no change.

And Syracuse? Akron killed the Orange IN Syracuse last year and the Zips were mediocre at best. I have to hand it to Coach Tressel. He schedules two or more MAC schools at home every year but in five years the Buckeyes will have played USC and Texas twice each.

The Buckeyes will play the Miami Hurricanes in 2010 & '11 and have the Cal Golden Bears scheduld for 2012 & '13.

OSU also does not play FCS schools as does Penn State, and they don't schedule eight home games every year.
