Ollie you might be happy and you might not with this but the Lions have signed Matt Stafford to a 6-year $78 million deal and $41.7 million of it being in guarenteed money.
This makes him the 1st pick in the NFL draft.

Colin, I was not happy. I let out some expletives when I read the news this morning.

Matthew Stafford is a fine looking QB. I just don't want to see him rushed and getting sacked sixty times a season like David Carr. Our o-line is putrid. We may wait until the 3rd round to get our left tackle of the future now. Jason Smith and the kid from Virginia were right there for the taking. Aaaaargh!

Daunte Culpepper's lost thirty pounds and looks good according to coaches and insiders. I would ride him for a couple of years (he's only 32) pick up a veteran backup, build the o-line and friggin' defense (we gave up 32.3 points a game last year!) I understand the thinking.. Stafford can watch Daunte for a year but did they have to guarantee him $40 million? We've had our team set back for five years plus with early QB selections in the past.. Joey Harrington, Andre Ware, Chuck Long.. Lions fans can not stomach the thought of another bust or watching a young signal caller with no protection.

Aaron Curry would've sure looked good in Honolulu blue, silver & black accents.. though he didn't play MLB in college. Man, a linebacking unit of Julien Peterson, Curry, and Ernie Sims.. it makes my heart skip a beat thinking about it.

With their second 1st round pick the Lions must now grab Rey Maualuga. Will he be there at # 20? The Browns have some interest in him though probably not at # 5. Detroit could possibly get Laurinaitis at # 33 but they may opt for the top rated safety, tackle, guard, or pass rusher there. Options are still there but I don't feel as good about the direction it's going. The Lions have two 3rd round picks but those guys may not necessarily step in and start from day one. Our 2nd round picks from '08 and '07 are already deemed career backups. Granted Matt Millen is gone but this new GM was hired by Millen.

I was hoping to get P. Jerry (at # 20) or Hood (# 33) for DT, but now priorities change.. with so many needs we had no business drafting a quarterback. I pray this is not a Tim Couch situation.

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno, who wore No. 24 in college (currently worn by All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey in Denver), asked the Broncos to wear No. 27. The Broncos then called Williams' mother, Rosalind Williams, to ask permission to use the number.
The Williams family called the Broncos back and gave its blessing for Moreno to wear the number -- on one condition.
The family plans to ask Moreno to donate a few hours of his time each month to the Darrent Williams Teen Center, which was opened in a low-income part of Denver last May to honor Williams' memory. Moreno wore the number at the team's minicamp practice Friday.

A Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant was permanently paralyzed from the waist down after his spine was severed during the collapse of the team's tent-like practice structure in a severe storm. The team announced Rich Behm was in stable condition at Parkland Hospital on Sunday after surgery to stabilize a fracture to the thoracic spine. The 33-year-old Behm was among a dozen people hurt in the accident Saturday, and was one of three Cowboys staffers who remained hospitalized.
