Well, the World Cup starts in Brazil on Wednesday amid the same sort of corruption and economic benefit questions that have plagued every third world country hosting an Olympics or World Cup, well, since the Montreal Winter Olympics. Not that I'm calling Canada a Third World Country. ;)

The Americans drew into the hardest group possible with Germany -- the presumptive (?) favorites -- Portugal -- the team with the current best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo -- and Ghana -- our national team's equivalent of what the Brewers are to the Pirates in that they have knocked us out of the past two world cups. And we're going to be playing without the best player, IMO, that the US has ever produced, Landon Donovan. Aside from juicy conspiracy theories -- the German born coach of the men, Jurgen Klinsmann, hates Donovan -- his dismissal seems to stem from the dichotomy that most Europeans use for analyzing a player's effectiveness, that of form versus class. Class is the skill that a player brings to the game, while his form is the way he's playing at the moment, be he going through a rough patch or is recovering from an injury. Donovan famously, well famously in American soccer circle, took a sabbatical two years ago, he'd basically been playing professional soccer for 14 years, and he's not rounded into full fitness. So, is half of the best American player better than anyone else at full physical peak. I say yes. He's got truly world class vision, and in the soccer world, vision doesn't dessert you as you age. And he's got the track record, having scored more world cup goals than Leo Messi and the aforementioned Ronaldo combined. Combined!!! It was a huge mistake, in my mind, to leave him off the squad, whatever his fitness. As an Englishman would say, form is temporary, class is permanent.

I'm hoping for 4 points from Ghana and Portugal. Portugal struggled with Mexico a couple nights AFO and they may be without Ronaldo. They look beatable at the moment. Ghana is our bogey team, but we have to be duefor at least a draw. As for Germany, if they have the group locked up after two matches, they may mail it in against US, which would at least give us a shot at finishing with 5 points. That would be enough to advance in this scenario.

John Oliver's hilarious, and oh-so-sad, takedown of FIFA...

That show is great. His rant on Net Neutrality was great, too.

Terrible ending to a game that started out so well. Awful officiating.

But, how would the referees earn their "walking cash" otherwise?

Baseballers on Twitter getting caught up in the WC. OK, maybe not getting caught up, but certainly following...

The game between Brazil and Mexico was very good for a scoreless draw.

And that goal by Timmy Cahill, in the twilight of his career, is why we watch soccer. One of the all-time great guys with the best goal in years. All after having gone 1-0 down to the Dutch literally seconds before.

Still can't believe how bad Spain played.

Should have bet the Dutch.

Argentina's road to the final is still easy, but they're playing spotty.

The 'group of death' has proved to be interesting. If the U.S. can beat Portugal should end up being the 'best' one.

This is why I just can't grasp soccer. A friggin' tie. The worst part? Both Germany and USA will probably tank the game and tie as well considering that's all they need.

You just can't keep playing in soccer. It's far too dangerous to do that. And most people don't like penalty kicks. Plus, at this stage, it's more about the points. The US is in a good position to advance.
