The Pitt Panthers have a really good wrestling team once again--a testimony to the excellent coaching and recruiting of Randy Stottlemyer and staff. The Panthers along with 11 other teams will be participating in the Brute Invitational Tournament at Lock Haven University this coming Saturday. I would venture to say the Panthers are the favorite to win both the EWL dual meet and tournament championships later on this season, but there will be some stiff competition from the other members of the EWL along the way.

Well, the Pitt Panthers took two seconds and an eighth place at the prestigious Midlands tournament between the holidays. a nice job by Messrs. Wilps, Thomusseit, and Zanetta. Now it's on the the EWL regular dual meet season, in which I think the Panthers will end up on top. Edinboro will provide the stiffest competition. Stay tuned.

The Pitt Duals are this coming Sunday morning at Fitzgerald Field Hose. The opponents are EWL foe Bloomsburg, who will coming off a big win over the University of Maryland and are not to be taken lightly; Davidson; and Eastern Michigan. If you are nearby, you should take a jaunt to Fitzgerald and see some good college wrestling. Things get underway at 10:00 AM with Pitt meeting Bloom in an official EWL dual meet. I am a bit far away in Delaware County in eastern PA, and I will be taking the train into the Penn Palestra to see the Quakers take on the Iowa State Cyclones in a big intersectional dual meet. College wrestling season is now in high gear with many an interesting dual on tap in January and February. I still think Pitt can win the EWL championships, although I didn't know that Zanetta at 125 is red shirting. That fact could make things a bit tougher for the Panthers. Any wrestling fans out there, please feel free to chime in. Husky

The Pitt Panthers suffered a 19-18 loss at the hands of the steadily improving Bloomsburg Huskies on Sunday at Fitzgerald Field House.
However, the Panthers still remain in the running for the EWL dual meet championship. Pittsburgh's next EWL oponent will be Lock haven, another team that has shown marked improvement recently. As a result of the win, Bloomsburg's status in the national rankings has jumped and that of the Panthers has declined. Stay tuned. The season still has quite a ways to go.

Pitt Defeats WVU

PITTSBURGH – The No. 15 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (8-4) saw six wrestlers pick up bonus points, including pins from Matt Wilps and Zac Thomusseit, as the Panthers cruised to a 31-9 victory over rival West Virginia (1-8) this evening at Fitzgerald Field House.

After dropping the opening match of the night, Shelton Mack got the Panthers on the board with a 14-5 major decision over Sean Fee at 133 pounds. Mack started out strong with three first period takedowns to take a 6-2 lead into the second. The lead stayed at four going into the third where Mack again went on the offensive securing a pair of takedowns to push his advantage to eight and securing the major.

WVU quickly regained the edge with a close victory at 141 pounds but Ronnie Garbinksy gave Pitt a lead it wouldn’t relinquish when he earned an 11-3 major over Tre Miller-Scott at 149 pounds. After Miller-Scott took a 3-2 advantage into the second, Garbinsky started down and quickly earned an escape and takedown. Shortly after, Garbinsky was able to turn Miller-Scott to his back and secure three near fall points to take an 8-3 lead into the third. The third also went Garbinsky’s way after Miller-Scott chose a neutral start and Garbinksy earned a takedown and used 3:18 of riding time to earn the major.

Donnie Tasser continued the Panther momentum at 157 pounds with a dominant 11-0 major decision over Jason Luster. Tasser scored takedowns in all three periods and was extremely impressive on top riding Luster for 5:28 and securing three near fall points off a turn in the third. The victory marks the second-consecutive contest in which Tasser has accumulated over five minutes of riding time.

At 165 pounds, Tyler Wilps took a 7-3 decision over Ross Renzi. Wilps started the first with a pair of takedowns to build a 4-1 cushion. Following a rideout in the second Wilps brought his 4-1 lead into the third but was unable to push it to a major and settled for the decision.
Following a Mountaineer win at 174, Max Thomusseit earned a 10-0 shutout victory over Lance Bryson. Thomusseit was the aggressor early scoring a quick double leg takedown and following it up with a turn for three near fall points. From there, Bryson was on his heels and got call for stalling twice and a caution once to help Thomusseit earn the major.

The Panthers closed the match in impressive fashion as Matt Wilps and Zac Thomusseit tallied victories by fall. Wilps stuck A.J. Vizcarrondo as time ran down in his match at 197 pounds, pinning Vizcarrondo with seven seconds left in the match, while Thomusseit got his fall in the first period at 2:53. The pin gave Thomusseit his team-best 10th victory by fall on the season, seven of which have come in the first period.

Pitt will return to the mats on Friday, Feb. 8, when it hosts in-state rival Penn State at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.

Pitt wrestlers will be participating in the Eastern Wrestling league championships this coming Saturday up at Edinboro. The will be the last EWL tournament ever for Pitt, as next year the Panthers will be in the ACC, which conference may fall apart in the near future from a wrestling standpoint as at least two schools having wrestling teams contemplate jumping to the Big Ten. Don't say you weren't warned, Pitt!! Incidentally, it's Virginia and NC State who are considering the "jump". Maryland is already going to the Big Ten. Maybe Pitt should think about staying in the EWL for wrestling. Incidentally, the EWL now has more qualifiers for nationals than the Big Twelve. Think about it, PItt!!!

It is with sadness that I bid adieu to Pitt wrestling, which is leaving the fabled EWL and going over to the ACC. A sad time in the history of EWL wrestling. Thanks for all the great memories, Pitt Panthers! We'll miss you. Wish you the best in your new conference. Glad to see you went out with a couple of All-Americans! Husky
